Zoner Winter Olympics thread

In Olympic hockey, there are infractions that can get a player disqualified for a game, the tournament, and some that can get a team disqualified. It’s a matter of degree, and officials have a lot of discretion.

Fighting
Match penalty for deliberately trying to injure another player
Game Misconduct (like abusing officials or dangerous boarding)
Accumulation Rule - get 4 penalties in a game, your out
Helmet Rule - if your helmet comes off, you must leave the ice immediately

This stuff goes on regularly in the NHL. Do it in the Olympics, and you and/or your team might be disqualified. Go home. You’re not playing anymore.

I like Olympic hockey.

The politics of International figure skating judging was overtly evident in the ice dancing results. Despite a flaw in their performance, the French pair was awarded gold, relegating the US pair to silver. Attempting to provide cover for the judges, a commentator suggested that the French “grade of execution” on other elements pushed them ahead of the flawless US performance.
It has been revealed that a French judge scored the French pair’s performance 8 points higher than anyone else. All of the other judges had scored the Americans’ performance highest, but the excessive margin of the French judge propelled the French pair to gold. Despite a extensive pattern of scoring the French pair highest in prior competitions (even when they fell down), this judge was allowed to be on the Olympic panel, and the international skating body is standing behind the Olympic outcome. Recourse is an appeal to an authority of international athletics. That could take years.

USA women place 4th in team pursuit skating qualifiers to advance to the next round.

Notably, in the men’s free skate, the top two guys (last to skate) fracked up their routines. Anticlimactic. Medals went to the skater from Kazakhstan and two Japanese guys. The American Quad God folded under pressure, fell twice, and subbed a single and doubles for planned quads. He finished 8th.

Why does NBC have to interview Amber Glynn immediately after what’s obviously the worst moments of her career, and after earlier having a piece on fragile mental health.
Because, people want to see pain as much or more than joy, or so the journalists tell themselves.

Amber is sort of the big sister of the Blade Angels. She’ll pull it together. Hopefully, she’ll throw down an epic free skate.

The world's 3 letter agencies are waiting on the precision shooting sports.

But, I'm also thinking a cross country skiing marine sniper would easily win gold.

USA beat their asses 5-0 just a few days ago. Why are they having such trouble with the gold medal on the line?
Canada's playing a tight shell defense. When we have the puck on their end, they are planting all their players within a few feet of the crease. They'll have one, sometimes two skaters out chasing the puck, but they are just clogging up the area in front of the goalie. Crap way to play hockey, but if that's what you feel you have to resort to to win, go ahead.
