Zimmerman Trial

Notabed...

Fantastic. You should by no means be free to "defend" yourself in the way that George Zimmerman did.

And

Good for you. No, really. Like I said, use whatever you want to protect yourself and your family. Hell, use a rocket launcher if you so desire... I do not care. And, if you kill them, you kill them. I just hope that, if and when you do kill an intruder, their death was not justified.

And

Make no mistake, I'm holding you accountable for the criminal's death regardless of the fact that you didn't want him to break in. Killing someone who doesn't pose an immediate, substantive threat to the lives of you and your family should be illegal, just as it was illegal for the criminal to enter your home. No matter how you'd like to spin "but OMG notabed22! I was defending my family!" or however the posters in this thread would like to phrase it, you still shouldn't be killing anyone unless it's absolutely "necessary." Two wrongs don't make a right.

And

And, in my book, the first leg I want to kick out from under the table of legal civilian gun ownership is making defending yourself via mortally wounding another party a crime. It's not your place to decide if someone lives or dies, regardless of the perceived level of threat from a criminal.

Yeah, just those selected comments makes for an unbiased juror. There are more, but I don't feel the need to search any more

Uh... of course I would push for Zimmerman to get 2nd degree murder. I've already stated that no one in this thread would be selected for the jury, myself included.

The post I responded to was alluding to the jury already having reached a verdict, but deciding amongst themselves to continue to remain sequestered to paint the illusion that they're deliberating.

I'm saying that's not the case because, if I were a member of a jury that had already reached their verdict --myself included--, I'm not going to sit around and pretend that I'm deliberating just to create some image. I sincerely doubt you'd act differently if you all agreed that someone was XXXX of XXXX.

So, I'm not sure what you're going on about here.

I think the jury feels they need to get him with something. Which is ridiculous and unfortunate.

They can't convict him of anything without locking him up for at least 25 years. It would be awful of this jury to do that purely out of fear of how the public would respond to an acquittal.

Really?

So it's 25 years or nothing? Regardless if its a lesser charge?

This is so twisted. Can we just get rid of Florida?

Apparently. They have firearm enhancements in their sentencing statutes. So it's something like max of 15 for manslaughter, but if a firearm is used it's max of 30 and minimum of 25 (according to wikipedia, not sure how accurate it is).

A minimum of 25 years for manslaughter is beyond ridiculous, imo.

What is the sentence for 2nd degree murder?

If this wasn't self defense, there is no such thing as self defense. Good luck to any other Floridian that is attacked and kills their attacker.

A not guilty verdict should have taken less than hour for 6 people wanting to go home for the weekend.

This will either be a hung jury or GZ will be found guilty of something. Either one would be a miscarriage of justice!

Well if this is indeed the case I'm hanging on for a hung jury. Not only for him but for the rest of the citizens in the state of Florida

The state would put him on trial again, they would have to. Can GZ afford another trial or would he take a plea?

Is he paying for this one? Finically? Or is this pro bono? If found guilty will his attorney file the appeals pro bono?

Hell no to a plea. He's gone this far.

Another question.

Can the judge over turn any finding the jury decides? Guilty or not?

I've seen it on tv. I know. It's tv.

But is there special circumstances?

Yes - a judge can issue a judgment notwithstanding the verdict (a jnov). But this gal ain't got the guts to pull the trigger. She would rather have a court of appeals make the ruling.

It doesn't matter if he can afford another trial. Believe it or not there are rich people that believe he's innocent and this trial is bs. They will donate to gz

My guess is that the jury is split at the moment. I'm not convinced that conviction is likely. I think one or two jurors are holding out and a hung jury is the absolute worst case scenario. And even then, the judge should make them hammer away for a while, and the lone holdout(s) for conviction will likely cave.
