AND Yahoo (yawn) continues to get it wrong via its contributors. The article today about the "multi-lingual" star witness notes that Zimmerman was indicted by a grand jury 44 days after the shooting. Wrong again.

Of course, Haitian as a 1st language, ebonics as a 2nd, english as a 3rd. I would call that multi-lingual by the lowered standards of today's educational system.

She was born in America...

She wasnt born in Haiti and floated over on a old VW bug converted into a raft.

Everyone defending this moron is looking for any reason other than the fact she is a moron to cover for her idiocy. I find it amusing that the defenders are quick to blame her ancestry. Interesting.

it's a real problem when the key witness has trouble speaking and reading English (including a letter she claimed to write). All the "white people just don't understand" is a crutch. That girl has been thru the US education system and IMO it looks to have failed her but we're going to blame white people instead. I would guess her opportunities are severely limited except for hopes of landing a reality tv gig.

an example of that:

Reaction to Rachel Jeantel on the stand “has been in terms of aesthetics, of disregarding a witness on the basis of how she talks, how good she is at reading and writing,” says George Ciccariello-Maher, a history and politics professor at Drexel University, in Philadelphia. “These are subtle things that echo literacy testing at the polls, echo the question of whether black Americans can testify against white people, of being always suspect in their testimony. It’s the same old dynamics emerging in a very different guise.”

“I … understand why white people wouldn’t like Rachel … But maybe the reason white people don’t understand Rachel Jeantel has something more to do with white privilege than what they could call Jeantel’s capricious nature,” she wrote

literacy tests and white privilege? Come on

Agreed, I know just as many poor uneducated White people who would have spoken the same way, and not have been able to read the letter "they wrote".

Jeantel wasn't a poor witness because of her education and difficulty with the English language. She was a poor witness because her statements were incredibly inconsistent, she admitted to having lied several times, and she became angry with the the defense attorney.

The talking heads are simply trying to come up with excuses for why the State's "star witness" tanked their already shaky case.

While I agree with this I would concede that the rest of it doesn't exactly help. Still, it's just trying to mitigate how bad the testimony really was even if it had been stated by a Harvard English professor.

Truth, you're speaking it.

I don't understand the State's plan here. They keep introducing witnesses whose testimonies are helpful to the defense, such as the neighbor who saw Martin on top of Zimmerman with the "ground-and-pound". Even the voice analyst the prosecution has on the stand right now is saying the recordings are useless to determine who was screaming for help.

This is doubly helping the defense, because they would likely call these witnesses during their case. But because they are getting to question these otherwise friendly witnesses on cross, they are able to ask leading questions that they wouldn't be allowed to ask on direct.

I know the State didn't have a great case to begin with. But it's like they are trying to throw the fight.

After getting over the shock of her very strange demeanor, I actually thought that Jeantel made a good witness at times. She appeared coached to say a few things by the prosecution and of course she could not even read the letter she signed, which was written by somebody else, but I thought that she tried to be accurate with the rest. Unfortunately, her speech was difficult to understand and her record of lying when she wanted to lie limited the value of her testimony.

She was the prosecution's witness not the defense.
