Your Thoughts On The Players Wanting More Money

Actually, Pittsburgh isn't profitable. They receive $40 million in revenue sharing from profitable franchises. That's what all the controversy was about. Pittsburgh tells their fans they don't have money to sign good players but their payroll is covered just in revenue shares so they can afford to sign better players. Somebody in the front office leaked what they were receiving from other owners.

The article that I read said they made $5 mil after the owners were paid a $20 mil dividend. Regardless I could careless about baseball

Anyway. So just to clarify, you want the owners to lock out and tell the players to shove it, because they are union?

I'm on the side of whatever gets a deal done so I don't miss out on any football. I don't favor owners or players, but virtually everybody is on the side of players and they attack ownership and make judgments based on very limited information. That's why I defend them. If people were ragging on the players I'd take up for them too, and I have in the past. People just get really carried away when judging those that are wealthy.

Note: with Pittsburgh I was quoting numbers from memory. This SI article says $69 M over 2 years, but either way the point remains the same. I took a college course that focused on the economics of sports management and we talked a lot about the Pirates.

Why are the players complaining? Wouldn't the jobs they get after the NFL offer health insurance? Or do they want to sit around and do nothing after they did their 10-15 years in the league. They made millions over the span of their career, they can afford health insurance. When I retire my company will not be providing health insurance, i'll have to buy that on my own. I don't see how NFL players should be different.

So at your job, do you have 300 pound objects falling on you every minute? If you do, I suggest you call OSHA

Kinda hard to get a job when you cant get out of bed on certain mornings.

Blame MLB's revenue-sharing system, not Pittsburgh Pirates - Joe Sheehan - SI.com

Thats very Robin Hood-esque of you, but we are talking about real people, not some sort of video game. You think the players can be easily replaced, and while that may be true, the quality of the product will drop. Not sure if you heard in your business class or not, but people are willing to pay top dollar for quality. I know I do.

If I ran a business that sold top quality widgets, and then replaced it with a cheaper quailty, I would expect sales and profits to decline over time

Nobody watches the Arena League for a reason, because its a crappy product. If you think that people want to pay $10 grand for season tickets to watch Arena League players go out on Fall Sundays and fumble the ball, get stupid penalties, miss blocks and get the Franchise players hurt, then I got beach front property for sale in Arizona

So you think that players who made 300K before taxes for 4 years, and who now need new knees or have to have hips replaced in their 40s (while an owner renews his lease on his multiple private jets) should just suck it up? These players have significantly reduced life spans

We live in the greatest country in the world, and the NFL is the greatest pro sport in the world. The least we can do is help them out with some Health Care when we send the players to pasture.

Okay, how about?: The owners are causing most of this mess. The main battle is with the owners who want two more games, and the players who were fine with the way things are.

It falls on the owners shoulders if there is no 2011 season.

I would love to see salaries come back down. It is getting beyond outrageous.
I would like to now point you to the offer that Albert Pujols just turned down from the Cardinals.

It does appear that it falls more on the owners, but I don't really know. Also, why is it on the owners because they are insistent on the 18-game proposal? Wouldn't it equally be on the players for refusing it?

There's no need for an 18 game season?

It's an obvious money grab?

The last two weeks or so is already filled with such great match ups as the Bills vs the Dolphins or the Browns vs the Bengals.

For some reason we can't get on the same page. You talk as if I want to replace all players. I am suggesting that the marginal players shut up and play, because they are replaced ALL THE TIME and you never even notice. For some reason in this case you think you would notice.

If the players get what they want the owners will use it as an excuse to raise ticket prices. They did teach me that in my business classes. Are you ready to pay more to see the extremely expendable players on special teams?

Wait, you mean those poor players had no idea that there would be contact in their chosen profession? They had no idea they would get hit, hurt, bruised, have a distinct possibility of long term injury, the possibility of severe injury such as concussion, paralysis and even death? Please. They get paid to play a game. They know the risks, they know the rewards. Stop spending money like Adam Jones at a skrip club, make some good investments, actually SAVE some money, use that college education you got FOR FREE and get yourself a job that has health insurance. Or pay for it yourself with the serious coin you made playing a game. Oh, and shut the *bleep* up about it. The owners and players both need to get over themselves and realize everybody loses if there's no season. Everybody loses money and the game itself takes a hit. Yes, pro sports players risk their health and lives to play a game and they typically get paid a ridiculous salary to do so. All so we, the fans, can watch. I would remind them that 99% of those fans who are buying tickets and merchandise won't make in a lifetime what many of the players make in a single season. everyone involved in the labor dispute needs to grow up, check themselves, and realize that WE pay their salaries. Yes, we the fans pay EVERYONE'S salary that is on either side of the table.

When have I said all players? You are the one saying "40% are expendable" and I asked you if you want 40% of your car parts replaced with cheaper/less quality parts, whats going to happen? You are going to get a crappier experience with that car.

Yes I am willing to pay for the top players available. DirecTV already charges me $250 for every NFL game, and if they want to charge $300 thats fine with me. But if the NFL cheapens the product, I am not paying high $$. I dont want to watch Arena Football league players screw around on my Sunday afternoons. Do you want the top coaches coaching at UT? I do. Do you think Dooley should replace the bottom 40% of the team with halfway decent High School Kids and pretend that we wont notice? Of course we will

If you replace the special teams with crappier football players, you get fumbled kickoffs, more penalties, crappier kickoffs, punts that dont go as far, more missed Field Goals, missed blocks leading to return guys getting hurt or blocked punts/kicks.

If you own a mutual fund, and they send you a letter saying, "hey we are replacing the bottom 40% of our traders, with unproven, less talanted traders" Guess what I and a whole lot of people are going to do? Pull their money out

I want to watch the best. Labron James could be the top TE in the NFL right now, but why would he play in the NFL and make a couple of Million and then hobble around for the rest of his life, when he can play in the NBA and make $100s of Millions and not have to take a beating?

You have to realize that the top athletes go where the money is. If you are the next Arod, and you are a stud at both baseball or football, where are you going to play?

The problem is that the majority of NFL guys are not making serious coin. The NBA and MLB guys are making serious money. The risk vs reward in the NFL isnt worth it for future top athletes vs the NBA or MLB

So if someone who plays for your favorite team that you like for his "hustle", and 10 years after he retires, you see him hobbling around, you are not going to feel bad for him?

Yeah, but that makes no sense because w/o owners you have no league.

The owners are just money men, they can be replaced with other people with deep pockets.

Its kinda like a bar on the strip. People come to be served drinks and be entertained, who cares who owns the bar because they are not serving drinks. The owner just pays the rent and salary and collects whats left.

You said, "You think the players can be easily replaced," if you left out "the" I wouldn't have thought you were referring to all players.

We're just never going to be on the same page. We don't speak the same language. I am not dumb enough to think Lebron James would play TE if it paid as much as the NBA, and that has nothing to do with this CBA (also the NFL will never be able to pay as much as the NBA).

Yeah right, they can easily be replaced. There's actually a lot more pro football players than there are billionaires, and how many of those billionaires want an NFL team? I am grateful to the owners for putting their money and time and effort in so that I can see Peyton Manning play. Hate them all you want, but we wouldn't have football without them.

I dont hate them at all, I would just respect them a whole lot more if they covered some health care.

So because of 32 guys we have football? We have football because fans create the demand. You know we have about 400 Billionares in the US, I willing to bet 10% of them wouldnt mind owning an Pro Football Team. On top of that we have 25 hedge funds that manage half a trillion $. I would bet that a few hedge funds would be willing to buy a pro football team

Compared to 99% of the people in the USA, yes, they make serious coin. Minimum is $285,000 for a rookie. Please. What other job makes that on the first day? No, I don't feel sorry for them. They got paid way more than me and it is their own fault they didn't manage their money well enough to maintain healthcare coverage. If they think the risk is too much, get a regular job like everybody who is buying their gear. Live on $15/hr or less and get over the prima donna attitude.
