Your Pick For the Tennessee Player That Was the Biggest Bust

Man some of these guys must be busts because I honestly don't even remember them. Granted, I'm not one that really pays a lot of attention to recruiting, but I don't even remember Darden and Owens. What years were these guys?

I would say James Banks ended up kind of a bust. He never was much of a QB; I remember his "run around like a chicken with its head cut off" technique (not all his fault). But he was good as a receiver and then his troubles just doomed him. I forgot how many chances he had to get it together but it was at least 3.

For the current team, definitely Crompton, though he has another year to change that. I'm not holding my breath though.

For the basketball team, I say Ramar Smith. He had a very promising freshman year but his sophmore year was crap and poof he's gone.

And for the NFL...no question Heath Shuler. Not only the biggest NFL bust from UT, one of the biggest NFL busts ever.

Actually check that...the biggest bust for UT basketball lately that I can think of is Buzz Peterson.

Jonathan Crompton is the biggest bust. Mr. 5 star just doesn't have the smarts to play D-1 foot ball. Evidently that's something hard to evaluate at the highschool level, especially from a small school league.

kelly washington was a nuisance ! well maybe a bust too. And i hate to say it but peyton couldnt beat Fla nor bring home a NC

If you think that even remotely makes Manning a bust, then you're an idiot.

well i guess im not an idiot because i didnt say peyton was a bust. I worship the guy to this day. I was just stating the only 2 bad things about him. Thats all. ( I still wear my #16 jersey quite often) go vols !!!

Oh yeah if anyone doesn't remember OJ "The Hitman" Owens. Try to find a back Issue of "It's football time in Tennessee" from I think 00'. There is a whole page spread about him. I remember reading that when I was about 14-15 thinking man this guy is going to be the second coming of John Lynch. Lol was I wrong. I'll be happen to scan it for you sometime. It also features Brodie Croyle as the no 1 QB prospect in the nation.

OJ Owens... He was a very sought after recruit form NC. I think he got injured early on and never got better.. He was also stuck between the proverbial Linebacker\Safety size category....

you listed 2 guys who rushed for 1000yds in college and 1 who played in the NFL as the biggest busts? (Davis may have made a roster too but not sure)

The backfield as a whole was a bust. I thought that backfield was going to be a Cadilac/Brown type of backfield.

As far as Riggs goes. He had a decent career, but I guess I just had huge expecations for him. He was afterall the #1 or #2 RB in the nation, about 12th overall.

I agree, Crompton was the #3 QB out of high school, at least he hasn't been kicked out, but crap he can't play a lick.

I could be wrong about the name since it has been 13 years but I believe Maurice Staley was a reciever in the class with Marcus Nash. He was a big time recruit.
I thought of Staley right away. I saw him play in high school and thought he would become a great player. Still think he would have, if he hadn't been such a screw-up.

OJ Owens is a good one. I hadnt thought of him. I remember watching his high school highlights and he was a headhunter.
The level of competition he played against in high school was abysmal. He played in the lowest classification of NC high school football, on a strong team in a very poor league. The chasm between high school and the SEC was enormous for him. I never thought he would be as good as his billing.

Are we talking all time or just this senior class? I thought Adam Myers White was going to be a beast when he came in, but he is just now getting to play. One from 10 years ago is from Vicksburg, Mississippi which is my hometown. Anyone rememeber the phenom, Brian Darden? He was like the number 1 ranked RB in the nation and never did anything.

Anyone remember Montrell Jones? He was a bust here, but then he went to play for Petrino at Louisville and had a very productive career.

The entire thread is about busts. Why would you even bring up Manning's name in here?

Well, if we're talking biggest busts in Tennessee history, I nominate this.

Now that's a BIG BUST!!!!! Not as big as Brian Darden but STILL GINORMOUS!

Daniel Brooks and Chris Heath come to mind from recently.

Brooks may be bigger because it also involved passing on Patrick Willis.

I just new Patrick Willis was going to be wearing orange when he left Bruceton. I don't even know if he was highly recruited by the Tennessee. If not Tennessee dropped the ball on that one.... great player.

read the comment above please.... it explains everything. in case you havent noticed, posters often stray away from the thread subject !!! I am sorry if i offended anyone, i had no intentions of putting PM in the bust category....GO VOLS !

I agree, Darden. Seems like ancient history now... My more recent vote would be Daniel Brooks. I was really hoping he'd be the second coming of Al Wilson.

Considering I heard his own highschool coach, who also coached Al Wilson at JCM in Jackson, make a comparison between the two and say that the difference between them was that Brooks was a little bigger and quicker than Wilson, this has to be # 1. I personally got the privilage of covering Wilson, man to man, in a passing league during the summer before our senior seasons. If Brooks was bigger and quicker than Wilson then he is the most wasted talent in the history of college football.

Brian Bosworth coming out of college

Ryan Leaf coming out of college

Chris Wienke coming out of college

Actually, Bosworth had a pretty good rookie season after leaving Oklahoma. The play where Bo Jackson ran over him at the 1 yard line to score is one of the silliest reasons that folks say Bosworth was overrated. I don't know anyone in the history of pro football that could stand with their heels on the 1 yard line and stop Bo Jackson from scoring with a full head of steam from 15 + yards away. Bosworth actually played very well his first year in the pros but fell off quickly after his ego surpassed his abilities and team. His big head is what cost him and he probably could have been a longtime probowler if he would have had the right work ethic.
