All through the OC search, whether it was on here or sports talk, I kept hearing over and over that we need to hire a flashy "young up and comer" I much rather have someone with years of experience as opposed to someone who has had limited success. I'm happy with the Debord hire, I think the guy knows football and will work well with CBJ..and we also don't have to worry about him being hired away as a HC.

I think it is funny that several against DeBord suggested hiring Fulmer as OC and in the same breath argue that DeBord has been out of the OC position too long.. I don't get the logic. 💀

I'm amazed how prevalent this is in the workplace. Saying you want to hire a 'young up and comer' is just another way of saying you don't want to hire someone who is old. I've seen people with entire departments full of young up and comers that barely function due to a lack of knowledge and experience. A blend of young ambitious people and experienced individuals seems to work better.

I understand a lot of the other questions around the Debord hire but complaining he's 58 doesn't seem like a very good one.

Logic? Logic has never been associated with many of those who post here.

On the Sunseri fiasco:

"If Dooley says he's the guy, that's good enough for me."

On the Clawson fiasco:

"If Fulmer says he's the guy, that's good enough for me."

I think Clawson would have been a good coach here if he would have had another year to implement his system..Sunseri is a good position coach, bad coordinator

With this talent assembled now...Any OC will do great

yep..simple may be better when you have great talent..When Miami was crushing people they had like 6 plays I think..they just ran them to perfection and defenses couldn't stop them

Nah. Young up and comers often have to pull all the slack for the old timers whether its because they have shortitis, bad vision, or any other of the accouterments that come with being old.

From my experience in the workplace (especially with Millennials and Gen Texters) it is the exact opposite..I have students who don't show up for three straight classes and then stroll in casually to ask me if they have "missed anything" :)

The issue is not Debord's age. It's that he has not been a coordinator in several years. On paper, his recent jobs kept getting less impressive and tell a story that he could be past his prime or his best years are behind him. I hope that's not the case, but his recent job at Michigan seems like a glorified retirement with a "feel sorry for you" title.

I hope he is awesome here and I'll take a wait and see approach. I'm not going to jump on every call he makes. I'm just stating WHY people are not excited about the hire. It's not an age issue.

My question is why in the hell would CBJ hire a guy who he thinks won't do a good job coaching and recruiting? It's obvious he would not, so why second guess the guy who has forgotten more about coaching than all of us put together "think" we know?

Butch has talked a lot over the past few days about welcoming the right players into our family. I think Debord fills a needed role that will be essential to coaching, nurturing, motivating and keeping the best players in the Vols family. I believe we will see a lot of eat crow posts a year from now from spasmodic yokels who spouted off against Debord before he ever arrived.

The optics of a Kiffin-DeBord match-up are going to be cringe worthy unless the Vols are able to pull a huge upset next October. The media is going to feature the contrast.

This is all about Jones doing a favor for an old coaching pal--make no mistake about that. BJ also thinks that DeBord can do a good job as coordinator, but that may be mostly a function of his bias for this guy in the first place. If Jones didn't know DeBord, he wouldn't have been in the top 50 of OC candidates.

I'm not sure that CBJ would stake his career over a favor if he didn't think he could do the job.

Why is this? I doubt the media obsesses over anything Kiffin/Tennessee related anymore. He's since failed at USC and landed as Bama's OC. Most of the obsession is with jilted Vol fans not realizing how much better off we are without him (notwithstanding the DDD - Derek Dooley Debacle).
