You played HS ball?

Dan, "Nose Tackle?"

Yeah, I know how old you are!

I also played Nose Tackle; it was often even referred to in my day as Middle Guard or Nose Guard.

I also played both ways as a Tight End. In those days the coaches didn't time you in the 40 but in the 100 yard dash. I ran the 100 in 11 flat, so I wasn't the fastest guy on the field, but our more fleet receivers had hands of stone, so I was the leading receiver. Not that it was anything to brag about. I had a new coach my junior year and he opened up the passing game a little. I scored 5 TDs that year and 4 2-point conversions. That was pretty amazing in those days, believe it or not. To put that in perspective, our defense was either 4/4 or even at times a 5/4. We played one man head up on the center, two tackles in the Otackle/Oguard slots, and two DEnds. Not a lot of attention was given to the forward pass in those days so we actually would line up with only 2 pure DBs at times.

I'm not telling my age, but I'll say this; my early playing years, i.e., middle-school, we did not have face masks. No, before some wisenheimer asks, we did not have leather helmets. I believe my first year to wear a face mask was my 8th grade year. They were still considered a little sissified by some, but after I broke my nose early in the season my mother insisted that I screw one on the helmet or quit. Up to that point they were voluntary. So, I screwed one on. If you've ever seen the mask that Gary Anderson wore then you get the general idea.

My freshman year in HS was the first year we were forced to wear mouth pieces. I can still taste that squishy rubber thing fresh out of the boiling water.
Yeah its been 27 years since for me but I still think of two a days when I smell fresh cut grass, the musty smell of the dungeon we called a locker room.

27 years? Whipper Snapper!!

I finished up my HS playing days 36 years ago.

But you're spot on with the recollections. It's amazing what the sense of smell can resurrect.

Just think about these scents: Rosin, green athletic tape, athlete's foot powder in the box outside the shower entrance, freshly laundered jocks (ughh), and the can of well hidden sardines that some clown always managed to hide in someone's locker, hopefully not yours. But best of all, the smell of burgers on the grill at the local hang-out after each home game.

Then top that off with the jubilation on the bus after the first road victory, complete with freshmen initiation, and the absolute funeral home quiet of the locker room after a loss.

Coach throwing the game tapes against the wall, sometimes even after a poorly played win, threatening to bench the entire first string and to add insult to injury, calling you out for a busted assignment in front of the whole squad.

1B, Pitcher, Cather in baseball

Now here's a real athlete folks. He's fast enough to pitch the ball, make it the plate and catch his own pitch, plus if they hit a grounder to short, he's able to make it to first base in time to make the out.

Everything but QB, RB, WR, DB and kicker. Thought about walking on at UT but they wanted me to gain 50 pounds and play nose guard. You also had to run 18 - 110 yard dashes under some ridiculous time with only 30 seconds between each sprint.

I was lucky enough to be a frat boy and play in a full contact spring game against another frat in Neyland. I will date myself and tell you that it was still on the astro turf.

It'd be fun to take all the Volnation and make a depth chart on the positions they had in high school. Dan????why did that dive play get 8 yards?!!!
