Dan, "Nose Tackle?"
Yeah, I know how old you are!
I also played Nose Tackle; it was often even referred to in my day as Middle Guard or Nose Guard.
I also played both ways as a Tight End. In those days the coaches didn't time you in the 40 but in the 100 yard dash. I ran the 100 in 11 flat, so I wasn't the fastest guy on the field, but our more fleet receivers had hands of stone, so I was the leading receiver. Not that it was anything to brag about. I had a new coach my junior year and he opened up the passing game a little. I scored 5 TDs that year and 4 2-point conversions. That was pretty amazing in those days, believe it or not. To put that in perspective, our defense was either 4/4 or even at times a 5/4. We played one man head up on the center, two tackles in the Otackle/Oguard slots, and two DEnds. Not a lot of attention was given to the forward pass in those days so we actually would line up with only 2 pure DBs at times.
I'm not telling my age, but I'll say this; my early playing years, i.e., middle-school, we did not have face masks. No, before some wisenheimer asks, we did not have leather helmets. I believe my first year to wear a face mask was my 8th grade year. They were still considered a little sissified by some, but after I broke my nose early in the season my mother insisted that I screw one on the helmet or quit. Up to that point they were voluntary. So, I screwed one on. If you've ever seen the mask that Gary Anderson wore then you get the general idea.
My freshman year in HS was the first year we were forced to wear mouth pieces. I can still taste that squishy rubber thing fresh out of the boiling water.
