Yeah, what would Auburn or Alabama do. (WWAD). Auburn wasn't afraid to hire Pearl and their bball program benefitted. Auburn has consistently told the NCAA to 'stick it' and hired whom they could and whom they thought gave them the best chance to win. And you do know that Saban really tried to hire Freeze as OC almost immediately after his faux pas? At least that's my general feeling about AU and Bama. I just hope that Tennessee isn't declining to interview Kiffen or Freeze or Chadwell due to past baggage and whatever dreaded fallout and media criticism we would get for making a risky hire. Listen people, there is NOTHING more shaming than the embarrassment of having a non-competitive football program. I dont give a rats "south end zone" for what the media or rival fans say to taunt us for a "risky" hire. As long as our coach lives a clean life while at UT, Im all for second chances and winning again. Just think about this. Once Saban retires, do you have a single doubt that if they believe Freeze is their best option, the Tide will damned well hire him and not give a damn about criticism? I know we aren't Bama, or even Auby at this point, but maybe we need to think like they do.
I just pray we aren't eliminating good candidates over "expected criticism" from media. But I get the sense that we are doing exactly that

Couldn’t agree more with you. Appears we are doing exactly this. I can’t understand why we would be so concerned with our “reputation” when we just got busted for the combo meal bags.

Pretty big situational difference with the possibility of the NCAA hammer about to drop.

Alabama only has those two programs for sports so their programs get all the support. If your state doesn't have professional sports then the fans are gonna spend more on the college level thats why they can do that

Alabama has a football factory. Saban has a building full of staff and a team full of All Americans. He has former NFL and college head coaches as Analysts. He has unlimited funds to buy what he needs. Their recruiting has another building full of analysts. They do all the leg work and watch film etc. It's practically semi-pro but all legal. You are right about the only game in town for the state of Alabama. We lived in Hoover a couple of years and those folks are serious about their football. My son's T Ball team had to have red and blue batting helmets. No crossing over. How do coaches compete with that? Tennessee needs a solid winner on this hire. Alabama went through a decade of bad coaches but they overcame and so can Tennessee.

After Gene Stallings, they went through Mike Dubose, Mike Price, Dennis Franchione and Mike Shula before FINALLY landing Nick Saban. This illustrates 2 things... (1) Alabama administrators, boosters, etc..., are no better, no smarter or wealthier than what the Vols have had for the past 15 years. (2) The right coach makes ALL the difference in the world.

The Bammers got tired of being mediocre and finally ponied up the cash (and other commitments) required in order to hire the very best. They didn't give a hoot about where that guy might be coaching, how long he had been at his current job or what he had said in the past about leaving. They went hard... they kept coming at him... and they finally made him an offer that he couldn't refuse. AND... they did it because they COULD.

Tennessee CAN, too. The question, as it always is... WILL they?
