my initial thought is that you're talking about coordinator potentials.

Charlie Strong is the only one on that list who I would even consider interviewing...but then again his team played terrible against Miami when he had his only chance as an interim HC.

No way should THE University of Tennessee sink to hiring Jeff Bower a coach who was FIRED from Lowly Southern Miss. If you are relieved of your duties at a Conference USA school then you have no business in the Brutal SEC. That being said the other 2 i wouldn't be ticked if they were hired but i wouldn't get real excited either.

Jeff Bower should have never been fired, and I think the folks (the sane ones at least) down in Hattiesburg would tell you that. Jeff consistently over-achieved at a school that has/ had little to no resources, while consistantly playing big name schools.

It all would have change had Ole Miss & MSU ever had the balls to play S. Miss.

In the event our usual suspects (Davis, Leach, Kelly, etc.) do not end up coming to UT, I am open to looking at top-quality, proven coordinators and take a gamble. I'd rather have one of the top coordinators in the country become head coach instead hiring the 3rd, 4th or 5th guy down our list of incumbent head coaches available.

The most sobering part of our situation is this...if a current head coach like Pete Carroll, Mack Brown, Nick Saban or Bob Stoops stepped down or were fired from their positions right now (or any top ten college job as such), would ANY of our coaching candidates (other than Davis) even be on those respective schools' wish list??? I'm not so sure they would be. Would our 2nd or 3rd choices be candidates for USC, Bama, ND? Doubt it. Our top choices are middle of the pack choices for other schools.

I hope we get Davis, but am prepared to move on afterwards if we don't (and hope we kick his ass in the Peach Bowl next year!). But once we get past Kelly, let's take a gamble on a great assistant...and NOT KIFFEN. Take a gamble on an assistant who has at least a 10 year track record of success, everywhere they have been, as a position coach all the way to being a coordinator...which sounds a lot like Davis.

I was about to say the same thing about him. He always impressed me as a coach and had some ball-hocking defenses over his tenure down there. Also, his ability to stay so long is pretty impressive to me. I think he started coaching there either Favre's last year or the year after. His teams won the conference title sevearal times while he was there so at least he's proven he can compete and attain goals no matter which conference he's in. A good friend of mine has a best friend in Hattiesburg who built Bower's house and apparently is really close to, which makes me want to do a little research and see what I can find out.

This reminds me of an old skit from Saturday Night Live or one of those type comedies, it was a spoof of a Johnny Carson type show:

Host: "And our next guest needs no introduction, because chances are you will not want to remember him anyway."

afraid we are not gonna get a top notch coach, probably have to settle for a coach with little hc experience, if that happens then hammy can kiss his job goodbye within 2 years

I would kind of like to see Mark Dantonio's name mentioned a little bit. Not only did he build the team with which Brian Kelly has enjoyed success at Cincinnati, but he's done a great job so far with a moribund Michigan State program. My Sparty friend would probably kill me if we stole her coach, but Dantonio impresses me a lot.

If Charlie Strong was as good as advertised he would already have a HC job...sorry, not impressed
