Into a positive W/L ratio, especially given the failed recruiting classes from '07-'09.

I have sit here and thought up every possibly excel sheet to make, pdf to covert, and article to point out, and it's just as simple as we are still a wreck of a team. Anyone who thinks otherwise is either too dumb to realize this, or too proud to admit it.

We are not a good team, and we only have 21 games under this current coaching staff. A lot of the guys they have playing for them, have less than that in starts. Our roster just isn't that good right now, and it's just facts.

There are no excuses at this point, just problems, and it's going to take time to fix. There is no point in trying to jump ship or start ignorant "Fire Dooley" threads. We just can't expect a band-aid to be put on the boat and it be fine.

I used this analogy the other day with my cousin and uncle...

Dooley is like a contractor trying to rebuild a house. The thing is, the house has already been built twice, and the people living in it have been there for 20 years.

The first contractor (Fulmer), built a house that lasted for 10 years, then the problems started. The house's foundation started to crack, then the house itself started to become unstable, so they decided to rebuild the house to fix the problems and have a better home.

Then the second contractor walks in (Kiffin), and gives them this wonderful blueprint of a dream home, but is hell bent on building it in less than 2 months time. The guy works on it, and starts to get the foundation built, and the framing started. Then just as quick as he starts, he runs off, but as he does he burns down the house on top of the foundation he tried to put it on.

Now, the third contractor in 3 years (Dooley) is hired to rebuild the house, and he knows it's a mess and so does the client. So, the third contractor embraces the home owners and their vision for a new wonderful home.

So, basically as fans we have two options.....

1. We either give him the proper amount of time to try and rebuild this program the right way and make everything stable again.

2. We constantly complain that Dooley isn't building it fast enough, after we have watched our program be destroyed in less than 3 calendar years before his arrival.

That's pretty much your only options. There is one more though, if your a bandwagon fan, go find someone else to root for and leave the die-hards be. I'm a die-hard UT fan, and will be patient in all of this, given the crappy conditions Dooley was handed when he started.

Just think about the new football facility being built. If you don't think UT is committed to winning and making this team better, they wouldn't be spending the money or time building that state-of-the-art facility.

Ok, I'm off my soap box now, but just remember, this isn't an over night fix, and never was.

Excellent points, Eric and I have only one addition to make. The cumulative effect of attrition, accrued as a result of three head coaches in four years, is the equivalent of detonating a tactical nuclear device. Dooley had to fill in the CRATER before proceeding to lay the foundation, which he is now doing.

When you realize that we have had I 17 first year players contribute significant time I think Dooley said compared to an Alabama that has had ZERO!! Not first year starter but first year player. We have one I repeat one senior in Malik Jackson that would be on another teams two deep. We lost the best sec qb and wr statistically and one of the best db's before season. For a team with such little help from upper classmen you have to give them a little time. We can't plug in another 5* wr when one goes down. Or plug in a 4* qb who has been in the system 2 plus years when the starter goes down. It takes time. Maybe with additions like croom and Patterson at wr and hopefully autry Jacobs and sentimore on dl we can begin to have the depth needed to compete. We have to give this team some time. I'm excited for next year. Bray and Hunter back....capable back ups should something happen....more depth on dl and at lb. Lets all relax. It will be ok. Just gotta give some time

Good post. I really wish the players heard more things like: WE are behind you. You men need to get 3yrs of lifting, running, film and PRACTICE in this winter! You all CAN turn this around and can beat ANYBODY that you outwork and out prepare. You are Tennessee vols! You do it or suck and ruin your chances of making a living in football.

I think what destroys fans is seeing a depleted team play excellent for one 1/2 against some of the best teams in the nation. It's a disconnect to see good football but repeatedly bad outcomes. They see good football so they expect it to continue but it doesn't. They see great RB play but bad QB play. They see a game leading TD throw dropped. Or a defense that has been lights out marched down the field for humiliating time clock eating TD. For many they don't see how depth was the root cause. Instead they think adjustments or a particular play call instead of the lack of a playmaker.

Your point is well put OP and I'm rooting for us. I think if this doesn't break our spirits entirely it will make next year and the coming successes better but you'll always have a glass half empty portion to your fanbase.

Really good post, OP.

Observations - Consistently good recruiting is the underpinning for a quality program. CDD/staff are getting that part done IMO. That's kind of like the team's foundation in your analogy.

The jury is still out on whether this GC can rebuild the house. He is a little green at it and some of his crew may not make the cut. Will see if he can overcome the flaws of the house and make the repairs. Since the contract is progress reviewed each year he has time to prove he can unless he causes excessive cost overruns relating to empty stands and bad relationships with the customers.
