You’d think the last ten years would be enough proof for fans to realize this, but it’s evidently not as I have seen a thread calling for the oc’s Head 4 games into his 1st year. Stability is the key to success, not farhing a coach everytime your team struggles.

Actually if you had read the entire thread you would have realized that I specifically said I wasn’t advocating firing him after 4 games. But that if things didn’t improve in the next 8 weeks that it was not unprecedented to make a move after one year.

possibly, in theory, and UT, in recent years, haven't been imperious to stupidity, but firing a coach after one year is raising stupidity to another level...:D

No its not. I had this argument ad nauseum last night. I understand that we have a first time HC and that its not the same as having a coach who already has a NC like Saban. I will definitely concede that point. But he got to Tuscaloosa hired a staff, and at the end of the season he made major changes at BOTH coordinator positions. He ended up going to Atlanta the next season and would have won the SECC if Tebow hadn't been unstoppable. I'm not saying that we would have the same results. I'm not even necessarily saying that we should drop Helton. I'm saying ITS NOT UNPRECEDENTED. Keeping an underperforming coach because its only been one year would seem to be the real height of stupidity.

I get that some were against hiring pruitt from the start and thats fine.

But is there a single person on this board that.was for the hire when it was made that now wants him fired? Anyone?

I personally am pulling for him harder than I have for any coach since Fulmer after the 05 disaster. I definitely don t want him gone.

Just look at Kentucky. They stuck with their coach and they are 5-0 right now.

Completely different set of expectations at UK; or at least it used to be that way. We go through another decade like the last one and making that will be us.

Also, they're 5-0 but a lot of season left.

It's tough for a lot of Vol fans to have patience after a decade of mediocrity (or at least, 9 out of the last 11 seasons), but it's necessary. Even great coaches don't turn around bad situations overnight. I don't know for sure that Pruitt is a great coach yet, but I do know we probably won't have a great idea until Year 3 at a minimum.

Yeah....the key ingredient being that his name is STOOPS--and he actually KNOWS football!
CJP has a coaching pedigree like STOOPS....and he knows football.

CBJ didn't deserve year 6 any more than CDD deserved another year....neither knows the game nor how to coach it.

These are very limited circumstances in which you have to fire a coach to get to success (see Butch Jones). But it is a "nuclear" option, you can't use it over and over. Similar to what we had to do to stop the Schiano hire. But baring criminal behavior, it is NEVER a good idea with a first year coach.

UT has used up a lifetimes worth of playing the "Fire the Coach" Card. That ship has sailed and we cannot play it again for at least a decade IMHO.

Now the flip side. I think that thankfully there will be no justifiable reason to even want to fire this particular coach. The proof is not there yet, but all the signs are right as are the intangibles, that we got the guy we need.

Go Vols! Every one grab an oar and pull together (in the same direction)
