You are what your record says you are.

There is a HUGE difference (as Jones has clearly said) between wanting/hoping to win and EXPECTING to win.

I have seen a TON including you who do not "expect" to win. They're everywhere on this site right now glorying in a moral victory at Bama.
What a fan expects means nothing. We don't play the game. Looking at a game and making a judgment based on talent etc.

No one is completely content but there is real progress being made. This is not simply about a win or a loss as too many are making it out to be

There are also more than a few hoping UT losses so Jones is replaced. How about calling them out instead of people who want to discuss the improvement we've seen?
Exactly

I wish the moral victory meme would die. It started when Kiffin played not to get blown out vs FL and gets repeated after every close loss since.

Just because some of us can be proud of the team in a losing effort does not mean it's a "moral victory". Or does it mean we are OK with losing.

I'm not calling anyone out. I'm simply trying to make a point. Go in just about any thread the last few days and you'll see members stating that they are simply not content with progress getting lambasted!

Look we all see the progress, hell we should expect the progress, but it means absolutely nothing if it doesn't translate to wins. As sjt18 stated "There is a HUGE difference (as Jones has clearly said) between wanting/hoping to win and EXPECTING to win.

Why shouldn't we expect the wins? It's what our Head Football Coach wants.

The true measure of PROGRESS for this Tennessee team this year is if they win the remaining games and the bowl game like Fulmer used to do...............Fulmer would lose the early one (usually to Florida) then win 90% of the remaining games

Georgia will fire their coach of 15 years after the year and their fans will complain about how bad they were this year. But our fan base will cling to that win and brag about how we beat them all off season. Just doesn't make since.

sense when does anything on here make any since?:dance2:

I've seen no posts gloryfying the loss. I've seen posts where people were and are proud of the effort however.

Folks, Volunteer fans are not satisfied with losses to any team (Alabama, Florida, etc) and do not recognize moral victories. But, reasonable Volunteer fans recognize that the team is progressing as evidenced by this team competing with the best teams in the country this year and are not pulling a chicken little after every loss. It is inarguable that Tennessee should have a better record this year than we do and the losses to UF (particularly) and OU are not to be accepted. This team, however, is much better than any of the teams Tennessee has fielded in years and is moving toward being a nationally relevant program again. If we are having this same debate in two or three years with Butch's Vols losing in this fashion to the best teams on our schedule, we will need to move on and hope we hire someone who can. I believe the trajectory, however, is that UT will field a conference championship caliber team as soon as next year and we will go on a run of sustained excellence for a good period of time under Butch.

Funny, that CBJ says there will be no moral victories at UT, but there are many threads started by posters wanting us to accept moral victories.

I'm glad CBJ said that. Fans should feel the same.

I've missed them. Where are the threads celebrating a moral victory?

That is just not true at this point. You're missing lots of good things of you're so hung up on a number. Glad I'm not that type of fan but have fun
I'm not hung up on a number. It's simply a fact, a reality. At some point, now, next year, the year after, the progress has to translate into wins. How can you or anyone else here not agree with that statement?

I'm not missing anything, I see the progress and I'm encouraged by it, I'm just not content with it. Exactly what type of fan does that make me?

The age old battle of who is the better fan - what makes the better fan - how should the better fan act...funny stuff

Really? It means nothing to the outcome of the game. Just like the silliness of fans telling other fans to not look past a team. We don't play so we can.
You just argue for the sake of argument. No way you can be this clueless.

To break it down to the simplest of terms, It's ok for fans to not be content with progress.

There is a huge difference between EXPECTING to win and actually winning. i don't think any of us want a team that expects to win. Delusional teams can expect to win and never do it...ask Vandy.

We are the third or 4th best team in the SEC. Just because Bill Parcells said it doesn't mean it's right.

Can you actualy say that after losing at home to Ark.? Player talent you may be close but with play calling in the mix we are much lower. You are what your record reflects. It's why we keep score after all these years

The only people I see mention moral victory are those trying to diminish the the coaching staff.

No one is celebrating. Please provide links in case I missed them. .

Then you would be in direct odds with CBJ because he has stated it time and again.

Not sure why any fan should have 'expected' an unranked Vols team to beat a top 10 Bama squad on the road, riding an 8 game winning streak, and coached by one of the best in the game. Hell yes, I wanted to see UT pull an upset but only a moron would 'expect' them to win. maybe that is why VN melts down after every loss. Do you expect to win the lottery every time too?

Ps...that is why everyone in America would have called it an Upset. That means UT was not expected to win....

i don't care. I think expecting to win and winning are two very different things. Butch needs to win. eventually he has to because we are all...ahem ahem...expecting him to win.

Oh, for the love of God! No one said they absolutely expected UT to beat Alabama, the point is that CBJ wants the team to expect to win! The winning mentality, playing winning football etc and so on! He has stated time and again he wants the fan base to expect wins! It's a state of mind! It's a culture change! The culture of winning!
