Read it again. I never said it was irrational to "judge". I said it was irrational to personalize it and "hate" as if Dooley did it just to hurt the feelings of Vol fans.
Dooley was held to a standard. It was an appropriate standard and the exact same one I think Jones should be held to.
Dooley didn't improve in year 2 but many including the two of us I believe gave him a bit of a pass due to the loss of Hunter. We gave him a mulligan for UK. But that DID put him on a hot seat entering year 3... and should have. Jones has already had his mulligan. He needs to produce like a coach capable of turning a program around and not just on signing day.
With the opinion circulating that Butch is overpaid, I think it is time to put down the metric for which Year Two will be judged.
Getting to a bowl game is an absolute minimum. Butch is making big boy dinero and he left wins on the field last year. We can forgive (because look who coached them the year before) but there are six no-brainer wins on our schedule and this team is already more than half his.
With the talent he has brought in, an extra month of practice, and we should absolutely handle any low tier bowl opponent. A 6 - 7 year and I think the heat should be on (and rightly so).
I like Butch, and I like almost everything he has done to date in Orange. At the end of the day though, Ws are the only coin of the realm. I think winning a bowl game is a successful Year Two. *
* (anything above 7-wins and the season is a big success as well, bowl game not included)
Missouri.
Hart should be directly in the crosshairs.
I'm keen to see what Donnie Knoxville can do, but what we have learned about Hart is that he will most definitely sit on his hands and not lead.
A leader would have had Gruden in Knoxville already. A leader would have had Pat Riley or his equivalent.
Me too.Personally, I am glad no one on here has the ear of Dave Hart, or the ear of someone who has the ear of Dave Hart, or someone who...well you get the idea. IMO CBJ will rebuild brick by brick and not wall by wall....I may be old.. but I come from a generation of those who exhibit a modicum of patience when a tough job is ahead.
So according to you, a "better" coach being paid more should get more time than the coach just fired for failing to win? Usually when you spend more money to "upgrade" a hire... the standard does not GO DOWN.
The irrational hatred against Dooley for simply not being good enough to fix the problems he inherited aside... if Jones W/L record is equal to or worse than Dooley's after 3 years then there is absolutely no question that his future with UT should be looked at.

Instant gratification is a killer... there is no coach on the planet who wants to be here more than Butch Jones. I won't put a time table on a guy that works this hard and has the respect of former players. Butch is worth every penny we are paying him and it will pay off
How do we define great? Do we fire butch if he is not great? How many great coaches are there? What ate the chances a great coach would come here? By the way, relative to about a half dozen or so jobs in the sec, the Tennessee job lags behind......
deI expect one thing this season: Moderate to Aggressive Play Calling
I don't know if I can handle another game like Vanderbilt. I know we had Dobbs in, but that strategy just frustrates me. Conservative play calling can secure a win in some games, but in rivalry games we should go for the kill. If we lose, at least we lose fighting.
Butch is gonna be just fine. He's building things his way. The right way.
Explain this one. How is the Tennessee job lagging behind?
What exactly has our AD done that you would have done differently?look at the stands on saturday and who our AD is. there is a reason muschump and strong turned us down. it is lagging behind right now, it seems forever since we were an ok team. a couple of good seasons though would put us again in the top of the sec. hopefully jones will get us there.

I thought that Dooley should have had the 3rd year, because injuries to Hunter and Bray messed up the second year. The 3rd year was doomed when Dooley decided to change his defensive system after all the coaches quit. I agree with no 4th year.should have fired dooley a year earlier. should have probably kept cuonzo. i also think he could be a reason strong and other coaches stayed away from UT. i don't think his coaching search was thought out or handled well. other than that i think he is great.
