Year Two: win a bowl game or go sit in the hot seat

Read it again. I never said it was irrational to "judge". I said it was irrational to personalize it and "hate" as if Dooley did it just to hurt the feelings of Vol fans.

Dooley was held to a standard. It was an appropriate standard and the exact same one I think Jones should be held to.

Dooley didn't improve in year 2 but many including the two of us I believe gave him a bit of a pass due to the loss of Hunter. We gave him a mulligan for UK. But that DID put him on a hot seat entering year 3... and should have. Jones has already had his mulligan. He needs to produce like a coach capable of turning a program around and not just on signing day.

I really can't be sure about your intentions when you comment on here, but you generally stir up a lot of people. Frankly the things you say are mostly accurate but lacking. Most of us want CBJ to be the real deal and want to see great improvement, starting this year, regardless of the schedule. You have to have the players though, and that is where CBJ is headed. Dooley was lazy in recruiting and even his assistants knew he shouldn't be in charge of a major college program. Butch has won championships, and I hope and think he will here.

With the opinion circulating that Butch is overpaid, I think it is time to put down the metric for which Year Two will be judged.

Getting to a bowl game is an absolute minimum. Butch is making big boy dinero and he left wins on the field last year. We can forgive (because look who coached them the year before) but there are six no-brainer wins on our schedule and this team is already more than half his.

With the talent he has brought in, an extra month of practice, and we should absolutely handle any low tier bowl opponent. A 6 - 7 year and I think the heat should be on (and rightly so).

I like Butch, and I like almost everything he has done to date in Orange. At the end of the day though, Ws are the only coin of the realm. I think winning a bowl game is a successful Year Two. *

* (anything above 7-wins and the season is a big success as well, bowl game not included)

Calm down & don't believe everything you read

Personally, I am glad no one on here has the ear of Dave Hart, or the ear of someone who has the ear of Dave Hart, or someone who...well you get the idea. IMO CBJ will rebuild brick by brick and not wall by wall....I may be old.. but I come from a generation of those who exhibit a modicum of patience when a tough job is ahead.

Missouri.

Vandy 2013 or 2014?

2013 Vandy team:

First back to back 9 win seasons in school history

Vanderbilt beat Florida, at "the Swamp" for the first time since 1945.

Vanderbilt beat Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, and Tennessee in the same season for the first time in school history.

Coaching change makes 2013 Vandy a tough sell

2014 Missouri will be better than 2014 Vandy IMO

Hart should be directly in the crosshairs.

I'm keen to see what Donnie Knoxville can do, but what we have learned about Hart is that he will most definitely sit on his hands and not lead.

A leader would have had Gruden in Knoxville already. A leader would have had Pat Riley or his equivalent.

Trolling?

Me too.

Instant gratification is a killer... there is no coach on the planet who wants to be here more than Butch Jones. I won't put a time table on a guy that works this hard and has the respect of former players. Butch is worth every penny we are paying him and it will pay off

So according to you, a "better" coach being paid more should get more time than the coach just fired for failing to win? Usually when you spend more money to "upgrade" a hire... the standard does not GO DOWN.

The irrational hatred against Dooley for simply not being good enough to fix the problems he inherited aside... if Jones W/L record is equal to or worse than Dooley's after 3 years then there is absolutely no question that his future with UT should be looked at.

Dooley sucked and pissed off a lot of people that matter along the way. A lot of people dont put much weight in that but if your gonna struggle you better not rub certain people the wrong way.

Jones may not be the long term answer either but he is miles ahead of Dooley in that regard and he will get the benefit of the doubt where Dooley didnt.

Good post - patience is nearly nonexistent nowadays.

I have faith in Butch - he'll get us back if we give him time to do it...much better fit than Kiffin and Dooley ever were.

How do we define great? Do we fire butch if he is not great? How many great coaches are there? What ate the chances a great coach would come here? By the way, relative to about a half dozen or so jobs in the sec, the Tennessee job lags behind......

Explain this one. How is the Tennessee job lagging behind?

I expect one thing this season: Moderate to Aggressive Play Calling

I don't know if I can handle another game like Vanderbilt. I know we had Dobbs in, but that strategy just frustrates me. Conservative play calling can secure a win in some games, but in rivalry games we should go for the kill. If we lose, at least we lose fighting.
de

we went down due to a holding call ....

Butch is gonna be just fine. He's building things his way. The right way.

i like what he has done so far, but it is way to early to say this yet. he showed some bad coaching in a couple of games last year, hopefully just due to lack of depth at positions. this year should give us a pretty good idea if he is gonna turn it around or not. i think the QB position is gonna kill him again this year. i just don't have faith in any of them.

look at the stands on saturday and who our AD is. there is a reason muschump and strong turned us down. it is lagging behind right now, it seems forever since we were an ok team. a couple of good seasons though would put us again in the top of the sec. hopefully jones will get us there.

What exactly has our AD done that you would have done differently?

should have fired dooley a year earlier. should have probably kept cuonzo. i also think he could be a reason strong and other coaches stayed away from UT. i don't think his coaching search was thought out or handled well. other than that i think he is great.

I thought that Dooley should have had the 3rd year, because injuries to Hunter and Bray messed up the second year. The 3rd year was doomed when Dooley decided to change his defensive system after all the coaches quit. I agree with no 4th year.

As far as Cuonzo goes, I don't have the inside information to know what happened. He NEVER seemed happy here to me. I like Cuonzo because he is a good role model and a decent coach, but I think that he could be easily replaced as a coach. His teams never accomplished much until they had their backs to the wall, and felt persecuted by the fans.

Should have fired Dooley after 2011?! You people put way too much stock in the UK game! Yes, UT could have won and gone to a crap bowl game. As Bray said, "big deal."

Fact is Hunter was lost on the 1st series of the UF game and Bray was gone soon after. Prior to that the team looked pretty good including stomping a mud hole in Butch's UC team.

I'm sure you gave Butch a pass for the injuries last year but you won't do the same for Dooley?

I'm not a Dooley supporter but fair is fair.

UT can go bowling without having to beat anyone better than Vanderbilt. Jones absolutely deserves to go on the hot seat for 2015 if we're home for Christmas this season.

We can't afford to warm his seat right now.
