Year End Thoughts/Stats

A few thoughts and/or stats:

1) Not making a bowl is a strike against CBJs IMO but I compare it to fouling a pitch straight back in baseball. The next pitch is likely to be hit extremely hard.

2) We led the SEC in least penalties. A HUGE improvement from 2012 which was 10th.

3) We made a huge improvement on defense. Nearly 7pts less per game. 29pts per game down from 35.7pts.

4) Forced 25 TOs up from 17.

5) The rushing game was much improved. 4.92 per carry up from 4.66. With our limited passing game this is a big achievement IMO.

6) Our return teams were much better than most seemed to think. 4th in punt return and 5th in KO return. Clearly those would have better if DV hadnt missed those games. The criticism for him is unwarranted and the stats prove it.

7) Neal made a huge jump this year. 5.23per rush up from 4.54. Lane actually regressed. Down to 5.29 from 5.48.

8) We were awful again rushing the passer. Only 18sacs this year and 17 last year. Without the kittens it was beyond awful. All this talk about losing our DL is going to hurt seems foolish when considering this stat.

9) Dobbs has a chance to be a huge factor in the read option. He grossed 263yds in 4 starts. Add that to our rushing total all year and we are in the top 3rd in the league in rushing. JW had 91yds in 7 starts for comparison.

Everyone here agrees CBJs is hitting a grand slam in recruiting.

I am very pleased with our defensive coaching staff. HUGE strides were made on that side of the ball with serious limitations on the DL amongst others.

Offensively I am far from discouraged. Seeing dobbs run the read option with serious effectiveness has shown me a glimpse of what the future will look like.

I am Very excited to see the next pitch thrown to this staff hit out of the park!!

10) we went 5-7 again......

It's really odd since we had all those improvements.

I think the defense scoring stats may possibly be a little misleading because instead of slinging a pass to CP and scoring in 15 seconds and giving the ball back last yr, this yr we ran the ball and chewed up a lot more clock which gave the opponent less opportunities to score. I would be interested to see a points per opponents possession comparison of this yr vs last yr. that should be a little more telling. Someone know how to get that?

Very little difference.


Last year we were 13th in TOP and 12th this year. About a minute difference per game

If CP would've come back alone this team could've definitely won 2 more games if not 3 with the improvements listed here. Great post.

My biggest issue so far is I hate the offensive scheme. It was bad this year except for a few quarters.

I was very skeptical of the spread. It was my only worry when CBJs was hired. Strangely I am less worried now. Perhaps watching auburn/mizzu both win with it has done it but seeing dobbs on the zone read gives me big hope. It seems very realistic to get 500-700 extra yards from the QB in this offense in a year

I'm just afraid they are the exception not the rule. No discounting it's effectiveness with those two schools. The personal isn't here to run it.

I'm ignorant of how Butch ran his offense with Collaros and others at UC, but I think it'd be interesting if we opted for a more hurry up, run oriented spread offense next year. I think Dobbs is both athletic and intelligent enough to perfect the read option. Similar to Auburn.

We have an up and coming, go to receiver (North), a quality back and an athletic, intelligent QB. His deficiencies in the passing game can be masked with an excellent run game (Just like Malzahn has done with Marshall).

It's all in the line though. CBJ has to coach them up in the trenches.

No it's not. If we had last years passing game/scoring offense, we'd likely be 8-4 or 9-3. Unfortunately, the loss of talent/new offensive scheme were too much to overcome.

I also see a similar win/loss ration next year, but hope to see a lot more improvements and much closer games with the big boys.

A few more recruiting classes like this one, some stability in the program and Butch showing he can coach 'em up, will take us a long way over the next couple of years!

Like most of you, patience is a virtue I just don't have much of, but at this point, we don't have much of a choice after the last 5 years. Thanks, Hammy!! :finger3::finger3::finger3:

Good point but 50% turnovers came in one game lol

Also...

The fact that the defense had to adjust to another scheme. Hard to be consistent when they've had 3 defensive coordinators
