Year three is essentially a standard for coaches to prove they have a program headed in the right direction. I think any fair assessment indicates Jones has drastically improved the talent level and excitement of the program. However, the results just haven't shown up, yet.

Most sane pre-season predictions had this team at 8-4 or 9-3, while being competitive with every team on the schedule. There is still a potential to be 8-4, if, and it's a big if, this staff figures out what they are going to be as an offense.

They have no offensive identity whatsoever. They preach tempo, but aren't playing with tempo. We have three 5 star WR's, yet don't even try to get them the ball. We have a struggling OL, yet rarely put Dobbs in roll outs to gain a few more seconds. The passing game has taken significant steps backwards with a literal genius Junior QB, an OL that has another year of development, and talented WRs all over the place. If they don't figure this out, this will be a loooooong and frustrating season.

But putting all that aside, i think most fans can deal with losing a close game to a pretty good OU team, even after losing a 17-0 lead late in the game. Most fans watched Saturday in utter disbelief as another lead disappeared, mainly due to astonishingly poor coaching decisions. Players have to make plays, but coaches call the plays and prep the players. They also are responsible for managing chaotic last minute drives trying to win the game. Our staff failed on both accounts. It's one thing to lose close games; its entirely different to continually make bizarre choices and not take responsibility for those choices. If you don't see the problem, how can you possibly fix it?

Whether it was the timeouts on 4th down, not going for 2 when an extra point means nothing, to only getting 4 plays off with 2 timeouts and 1:30 left in the game, this staff has to seriously re-examine their decision making process. The only way to do that is accept there is a problem, and Butch just doesn't seem to acknowledge or accept that a problem exists.

Now back to year 3. I will ask a simple question: Where is the player development at this point? Is the OL dramatically improved? Are the WR's better? We have a walk-on MLB when we knew AJ would graduate. A head case PK. DB's that get caught way out of position on a 4th & 14 that leads to a game changing TD. And a QB with 3 years in the program that either can't make accurate down field throws (although he did so with some success last year) or a staff that thinks the forward pass should be limited to bubble screens and intentional grounding on simple screen plays.

The staff has to do better and can do better, but first they have to admit they just aren't getting it done. To hear Butch say he thought they did an excellent job managing the final drive literally almost made me throw up in my mouth. Even if he thought that, you cannot be so tone deaf as to say it out loud.

They can turn things around, but it is past time to prove we are heading in the right direction. It is time to start winning meaningful games. This will require an offensive identity and a coaching staff that uses fewer charts and more common sense. I hope they do.

Go Vols...

The OL and DB have taken some injuries and OL is tough position to play right away at. I will give them a pass for that. I'm not sure what is up with Dobbs, but he at least needs to be given a chance to throw. The mlb positions I think we have missed on some recruits. Medley was decent last year and I don't think anybody saw this coming this year. The WR's is what has me baffled. On one hand we are not throwing much to them, but I don't see many getting open either. I think the coaches have failed to get the potential out of this group.

8-4 will buy Butch another year with the fans. He is year another year for sure whether we like it or not.

Vols could be 4-0 without Jones' in-game decisions. It's obvious he is not a Power 5 level coach. Instead we settle for wins against lower level teams. How many wins over cupcakes equals a win over a ranked team?

I've said since before the Season 7-5....8-4 if they get a break or two to go our way...

So far...opportunities to create breaks have been presented and squandered...

And...frankly...7-5 is at risk with the mental state of the program...

As it pertains to CBJ and Debord, this is what truly baffles me. I think of all the other coaches in NCAA that have as much coaching experience and I can't believe they would have lost to OU or UF. Petrino at Louisville? No. Harbaugh at Michigan? H3ll no. James Franklin at Penn State - No. Stoops at Kentucky? No. Honestly, I have to go completely mid-major to find a coach that I think this disaster could possibly occur to...and therein lies the problem. CBJ has done exceedingly well in all areas of UT football - except game-time management. That inexperience or inability has seemed to cost us points. His "coaching-cronyism" is also costing us games. FIVE 4th down completions in a single game - is that an SEC record? A NCAA record? Pleaaassseeeeeeee

Here's hoping Arky is the turn-around game.

I totally agree the passing game is the biggest surprise. I don't know if this is a Debord, Jones, or combination thereof situation, but the lack of results speak for themselves. Its a bit disconcerting that the WR with no Spring or Fall practice leads the team with less than 100 yards receiving 4 games into the season.

Just read that we our streaks against UF, BAMA, and UGA are now at 24 games. Unreal...

Great post CA_Vol

Our glorious leader has been exposed for gross incompetence.
Give Butch a recruiting role, but wasting our talent with poor game management and no passing scheme for this stable of thoroughbred receivers is just astounding incompetence!

Four games completed and not one receiver has 100 yards for the season?? Crazy.

I'm usually try to be a "glass half-full" kind of guy when it comes to Tennessee football. And I still think Butch and the Vols can turn it around. A big win over Bama or Georgia would go a long way to making up for the last two losses. But.... if we don't beat a mediocre Florida team, just how good are our chances against teams much better than the Gators? I think the clock has started ticking on Coach Jones and I don't take any pleasure at all in saying that.

Will Coach Jones clock stop after a first down? Or are the same refs from the Florida game controlling the clock?:)

This is precisely right. I said 8-4 prior to the season, but the manner in which we lost these games is what fans are reacting to. Its one thing to just get beaten, but to lose these two games in such similar and shocking fashion is what is so disconcerting. I even think one or the other, and the feeling from the fanbase would be different. Its the fact that they occurred two weeks from each other that magnifies the situation.

We cannot beat Georgia or Alabama. Let along Arkansas who will come in and beat the sh** out of us. GBO!
