Not sure why a product would be considered crap after encountering my first problem in three and a half years.

It is a common issue with them. Just sayin. Happened me in less than a yr. You and another poster, or 2 in your thread. Too common man

Really, that got deleted? Since when do ppl stay on topic here? Just stating a fact that this issue is common. Could be helpful for someone trying to decide on a system

Are you this ignorant? Stop trying to turn this into a non stop console battle

That was not my intention. Dont be so touchy. I never mentioned another console. I don't want this to escalate, so Ill drop it now. Just saying it's a common problem is all.

Mullet, get with Mason, he has fixed it before and would be the one to help you. I have never had the issue myself and havent known too many people to have it.

Have the hard drive open right now, cleaned the lens with a q-tip. Still messed up. Might be a hard drive issue.

Then its a another issue totally. I know cat is a ***** but right now best time to buy new xbox. You could pick up old one from Craigs list for under 100 or go with slim for 230.

Was the lense in the back before you moved it.
It was in the front when i opened it up, i actually moved it to the back and then to the front for ****s and giggles. From what im reading it sounds like i have either a bad laser or need to replace the entire disc drive which has to be the same model or you have to flash it, sounds slightly complicated.
Thanks for the help though mason, i feel better that i at least tried before throwing it through the neighbors window.

at least a replacement dvd laser is less than 40 bucks compared to what you would have paid for a broken blue ray.

Read up on lasers I hear the replacements will do same thing. I wouldn't go with new drive either hit up local game stop for used unit or CL.

Unless you know what you are doing, I wouldnt buy a new drive and try to do it yourself either. You will come out better in the long run doing just as Mason suggested. Buy a stripped down basic one from gamestop....even a refurbished one from there. Just when you tell them you want one, tell them to get the one that is the newest according to the ID sticker on the back.

I came really close to buying a new console this year when i bought the Kinect.I figured my console would last at least another year, then maybe go crazy with a new system in 12 or so. Might have regretted that decision. Its just the timing that's making me laugh over here.

I had a similar problem with my PS2. I took it apart in order to reach the lens. I didn't even use a lens cleaner... just rubbing alcohol and a Q tip. Put it back together and it worked perfectly.
