I would say both Angle and Benoit were better than Bryan as a "pure wrestler". What made Bryan special was his energy and spirit. He had great moves and I was a big fan don't get me wrong, but I don't see how anyone can put him in the ballpark of Angle. But, of course, this is all subjective. For instance, while I think he brought a lot to the table, I always thought Punk was slightly below average as a "pure wrestler". I know I'm in the minority there.
I think Pure Wrestler is too objective of a term. We use that a lot to talk about indy guys but I feel there are two different types of this.
There's "Wrestling" which is the Greco Roman style that guys like Angle and Lesnar have backgrounds in and were some of the best in the world at at one time.
Then there is "Pure Wrestling" which, to me is guys like Bryan, Benoit, and Eddie Guerrero.
When I think of "Pure Wrestling" I think of guys who can do almost anything in the ring. You need a suplex? Got it. Need a moonsault? Got it. Need a guy who can do five submission hold reversals in a row with the other guy into a botched looking finish? Got it.
I think Angle is just one of the best wrestlers of all time, both entertaining and in the traditional sense. But I never for a second expect him to pull off a Hurricanrana or a Frog Splash. When I think of guys like Bryan, Benoit, and Eddie, there isn't a single move I don't think they could do with someone on the other end able to take it.
I think Punk and Cena put on the best display of "Pure Wrestling" in this era when they had their Monday Night match with the Hurricanrana from Cena and the Tombstone from Punk, two moves you never really imagined the other could do, but they pulled off almost perfectly.
I'm not saying Angle couldn't possibly do some of that stuff, for a long time I never imagined Cena could and then he started upping his game extremely before he lost the U.S. Title, but there isn't really a maneuver that I wouldn't believe Bryan or Benoit could do if you told me they did it, with exceptions being to outright showings of physical strength involved (like Cena picking up Big Show or Mark Henry at one point.)
For reference, I feel almost this exact same way about Finn Balor and Nakamura, and even to a lesser extent AJ Styles if he truly wanted.
