He should. Present company excluded, wrestling still appeals to the trailer park crowd* in large part.

*my apologies in advance to anyone posting on VN from a trailer park, specifically Lawrence Wright

Stone Cold brought back the excitement
He did a little more than that. He only snatched Vince and Co. from the jaws of bankruptcy. Just a small thing.

Maybe it's one of those things where you had to have lived through both times to understand it.
Agreed. I lived through both, and understand why Austin was a couple turns of the dial more popular. Possibly more historically important, also, though that is more debatable than the former.

There is no way you could have lived through both, have enough sense about you to work the internet and still put Austin over Hogan.

Very odd thing to say. Are you under some delusion Hulkamania occurred in the 1940s?

Hell, even Jim Ross is on record stating Austin was the bigger star, and I imagine he's older than you and I both.

I mean, I get it. The ankle-biter in me marks out every time I hear Real American. But I'm also objective about what I've watched. And, despite learning on a typewriter, I can even type on this iPhone! WOW!

I think it's safe to say that Hogan broadened the wrestling horizon for the Stone Colds and The Rocks to be as big as they were.

I look at Hogan/Stone Cold/Rock in the same vein as I look at Marino/Peyton/Brady

You can't really solidly say who is or isn't #1 (unlike in say, Basketball), all we know for sure is the discussion constantly involves the same guys. For me personally, Stone Cold was bigger than Hogan, but I grew up on Stone Cold. Some of my first cuss words were learned thanks to him, and you bet your ass my friends and I took turns practicing stunners and Rock Bottoms.

A more compelling debate might be who belongs on the Mount Rushmore of wrestling. Lots of variables in play, from popularity to longevity to work rate. Narrowing the historical "faces of the business" down to four is one tall task.

Hogan and Austin are the only locks, in my view, with Andre on their heels as a near-lock. Who else is in consideration for 3-4? Flair, Sammartino, Savage, Rock, Taker, Dusty, Superstar....... ?

Flair, without a doubt.

Hogan was definitely the first star of professional wrestling and the first guy to successfully cross into mainstream entertainment. He was a real life hero to thousands of kids that grew up in the 80's and early 90's, but IMO, Stone Cold made wrestling "cool" and was able to reach a larger, older audience and became the brightest star in a larger galaxy, if you will. From a technical wrestling standpoint, Stone Cold is far superior to both Hogan and The Rock. It doesn't necessarily mean that Austin was a bigger star than Hogan, they were just stars in under completely different circumstances.

Faces of the business. Whereas you can stick them on TV and a lot of people are gonna recognize who they are.

That would be Hogan, Austin, Andre, and Vince.

Now, if you're doing wrestlers only, its gonna be Hogan, Austin, Andre, and the Rock.

Would/do people outside of the wrestling world recognize Vince?

I was referring to wrestlers, but it makes sense to include Vince, maybe above everyone else.

Granted for some bad reasons (steroid trials) and good (creator of WrestleMania). But even my parents know who Vince is.

Roman Reigns promo was terrible

Guy is Cena without even any hint of promo skills. Better get used to him tho. He is Vince's chosen one, unless the fans absolutely rebel against it.
