WRU? Name Your Top 5 of All-Time

Willie Gault always heard footsteps and seemed to care more about his physical well being than the team.

Tim McGee had heart. I would take him over Willie any day.

Eric Swanson was an overachiever. When there was a jump ball situation, Eric always seemed to mug the defender.

Gault was awesome on kickoff returns.

Joey Kent
Robert Meachem
Carl Pickens
Larry Sievers
Richmond Flowers

In no particular order

Definitely agree with this list. Probably a lot of people not old enough to remember what a great athlete Richmond Flowers was, college and pro football as well as a world class hurdles runner.

Larry Seivers made catches that would rival anybody today.

No order
Kent
Harper
Pickens
Meachem
M. Nash

I like your list. But myself, I would replace Meachem with Stallworth. After watching how good Stallworth caught the ball in the 01 KY game with a cast on his hand, it put him right up there as one of the best WRs in TN history IMO. If Kelly Washington would have been around longer, he would be in this race. Ill never forget the LSU game, where he set the record for reciving yards in a single game, with the help of the Iceman.

Any Top 5 list that doesnt have 2 time consensus All American Larry Seivers on it is no list.

Again, this is opinions on member's top 5 & who they think is the best. There are no right or wrong selections.

I completely agree. If there was a big catch to be made Larry Seivers was my guy to throw to, ALWAYS!!

For those younger than myself and that is most of you guys you missed a show when he was on the field.

I agree just like the poster above Seivers was a great WR. He just didn't make my top 5 along with what appears to be a few others as well.

AMEN.

Thank you, Hop

Same as above. We all have our favorite All-Time players at every position. There are so many different combination we could provide at WR.

How has this thread made it 4 pages with no mention of Denarius Moore?

Good point. However, to me he didn't put up great numbers. He was a really good WR though. Also, had some nice returns as well. Went on to have a couple of decent years in Oakland too.

He would definitely be in my top 15 but I asked for top 5 & I also gave 5 honorable mention players myself. He would definitely be in my next set of 5 honorable mention guys.

Leaving out Seivers isnt part of a popularity contest. Its a lack of UT football knowledge. There is no other 2 time all American WR. None.

Anyone who ever saw him play understands this post. In terms of actually catching the ball, he's the best to ever play at Tennessee IMHO.

What? I said this isn't a question of whether the WR is All-American or whatever. It's name "Your" top 5. Not what others think or say. What you have as your own favorite WR's. You're missing the point.

Just because somebody doesn't include Seivers in their top 5 doesn't mean they're wrong. I've said that many times. It's not a popularity contest either. It's member's own personal favorites/opinions.

Nobody should be telling others they should leave this player & that player in or out. That's absolutely not what this thread is about. Thanks!

Tony, you started this thread with reference to "top 5" wide receivers. Many, perhaps most, of us interpret that as "best 5." If you had kicked off the discussion more specifically with reference to "favorite 5" receivers, I dare say that you would have gotten fundamentally different answers.

It says "Your" top 5 buddy. Don't you know the difference in that & everybody's else's top 5? I didn't say to name the best 5 WR's of All-Time. I put the word "Your" in there for a reason.

If not, then this would have lead to exactly what I said. People would be telling others to replace this guy with that guy because you're wrong.

This would have started a bunch of firestorms & arguments & disagreements all over the place. Don't you get it?

No, I wouldn't blast you because it's "Your" top 5 & not what everybody else thinks. Maybe others would but not me.

It's ok for people to discuss or say why they would have such & such player in their top 5 but not demand/tell others they are wrong & need to change them.

I don't really get the Stanley Morgan picks. He had about 250 yards per season receiving. Now if we're talking about Vols recivers in the NFL I understand

Plus Stanley was a tailback at Tennessee for 3 of his 4 seasons. 48 career catches, 353 career rushes. He was an All-Pro WR in the NFL and he was a running back at Tennessee.

Both of you guys have very valid points. What was Morgan "officially" listed as while at UT his four seasons? Was it WR the whole time and/or RB part of the time? I remember him making it seems more plays as a WR but I was a very young man at that time.

Morgan left UT when I was 10 years of age but I do remember watching him vividly. I do remember him running the ball too but it just seemed to me like he made more plays as a WR. Obviously, by his stats he had more plays rushing than receiving.

Started out as a freshman at WR. Had 22 catches in year one.

Was moved to RB his last 3 seasons.....from that point on, 351 carries vs 26 receptions.

Obviously transitioned back to WR once drafted by the Patriots and had a great career as a wideout.

I bet that Stanley was running wide and off of a lot of pitches. I doubt that the majority of his carries were up the middle. Also, screen passes that were thrown laterally were statically scored as runs.

Joey Clinkscales
Thomas Woods
Alvin Harper
Carl Pickens
Craig Faulkner

While I wouldn't put Clinkscales in the top 5, I have yet to see a guy so good at catching football coming right over his head in the corner of the end zone...Joey did that several times. Must've had amazing peripheral vision. :hi:

Not sure what you're saying. Are you suggesting that he wasn't a running back his last 3 years when he had 351 carries for 1,920 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns?......versus 26 catches for 574 yards and 4 touchdowns?

Btw, he was the first player in Vol history to run for 200 yards in a single game. Guess he had a lot of lateral screen passes and end arounds that day.

That's only about 65 yards per game. I doubt that that the majority of those yards were gained crashing into the heart of defenses. I doubt that Stanley ran over too many linebackers.
