WRU? Name Your Top 5 of All-Time

Since we're still in the off-season & so anxiously awaiting the 2016 season I wanted to have a discussion on WRU in the University of Tennessee.

Seems WRU hasn't fit the name of this University in quite some time even though we've had some pretty good WR's in recent years. I want everyone to name their top 5 WR's of All-Time here at UT.

I know we're going to have a bunch of different opinions on players so this should be interesting to discuss. If you want anyone can state their reasons why or just simply give the top 5 without any more information.

Here's my personal top 5:

1. Carl Pickens (89-91)
2. Willie Gault (79-82)
3. Joey Kent (93-96)
4. Alvin Harper (87-90)
5. Peerless Price (95-98, on 1998 national championship team)

Honorable mention for me: Stanley Morgan (79-81), Marcus Nash (94-97), Robert Meachem (2004-2006), Cedric Wilson (1997-2000), Tim McGee (82-85).

Remember, there are no wrongs or rights here. It's all based upon personal preference. However, there should be players that showed they deserved to be there with stats and/or personal accomplishments. Thanks & have fun doing this guys! :)

1. Morgan was primarily a running back at Tennessee.

2. Joey Kent belongs in the top 5. Substitute him for Morgan IMHO.

3. Larry Seivers belongs on the list. Replace Gault with him IMO.

Joey Kent and Robert Meachem should most definitely be in the top 5.

Remember, I said these are all opinionated choices. You could tell me to change this WR this WR but we all look at this differently.

I do have Kent on my honorable mention list. I still think Gault was better than Seivers IMO. I thought Morgan played more WR than RB while at UT? He was drafted as a WR.

I had him just outside my top 5 in the honorable mention category. First listed in that category so would be #6 for me but I could see why he possibly should be in the top 5.

No Craig Faulkner? OK, maybe not top 5, but I think that is the point of WRU. There are so many variations of a top 5 that almost all us would be right with our opinion.

No claim these are the best but my 5 personal favorites are

C Patterson
Eric Parker
James Banks
Kelly Washington
Robert Meachem

Edit: I forgot Cedrick Wilson

He's in there too but I can't pick one of the above to knock off so there are my favorite 6

Just gave my opinions. Agreed with 3 of your choices.

Also, Morgan came to UT as a WR but played there only as a freshman. For his career....48 catches vs 353 carries. Because of his size, he obviously played WR in the NFL and was, of course, outstanding there.

Another thought, just my opinion of course.....Seivers had much better hands than Gault, had nearly 30 more career catches, averaged about the same yards per catch in a 3 year career in a less pass friendly offense. Willie was obviously a more athletic, much faster, a more explosive athlete.

If it's just the list you want....

Gotcha. I would possibly consider switching Morgan out with Joey Kent. Not a given yet but I will consider it more now. The other 4 are not going to change for me. I liked them more than any others.

Alvin Harper didn't put up huge numbers at UT either but once he got to Dallas he showed his talent & skills. He made some unbelievable catches at UT & in Dallas. I loved watching Marcus Nash & Joey Kent together on the field together as weapons for Peyton.

Remember what them 2 WR's did to Bama in Tuscaloosa in Peyton's junior season? Them 2 alone beat Bama. We crushed them 41-14. Kent & Nash I believe in that game combined for at least 10-12 catches & 4 TD's.

Lot of great choices. Nash and Kent were outstanding college receivers and, having been at Tennessee as a student when Harper was there, I believe he's one of our 5 best all-time as well. Other guys like TD Woods, Robert Meachem, Tim McGee and Cedrick Wilson certainly ought to be mentioned as well IMO. Like you said, a lot of opinions, really hard to say there are right and wrong answers. Thanks for starting the thread.

Exactly. There are no right & wrong answers unless somebody just blatantly mentions a WR that never played or barely seen the field. :lol:

Wes Rucker wrote an article on precisely this topic two years ago and I have to wholeheartedly agree with his assessment of Joey Kent:

"There’s an argument to be made that Kent got to play with two of the best quarterbacks in Tennessee history in Peyton Manning and Heath Shuler. And that’s a fair argument. And Kent’s teams never won an SEC or national championship. That’s also a fair argument. But you can’t think of “Wide Receiver U.” without thinking of Kent, who was explosive, reliable and at times simply unguardable. He’s Tennessee’s all-time leader in catches (183), yards (2,814) and touchdowns (25). Despite having a disappointing professional career for a second-round draft pick — with the highlight being an appearance in the memorable Titans-Rams Super Bowl thriller — Kent was as good as the SEC had at the receiver in the mid-1990s, and his records put him atop this who’s who of lists. And let's not forget "Manning to Kent" on the first play of the 1995 Tennessee-Alabama game. No one on either side of The Third Saturday in October will forget that play" (Top five wide receivers in Tennessee Vols football history).

You can certainly say that Peyton was largely responsible for Kent's statistical productivity, but I don't see how you can fail to put the leader in every major statistical category on a list of top-5 receivers at UT.

I would have to say that Seivers had the best hands of any receiver I have ever seen at Tennessee in almost 50 years of watching Big Orange football. He also was an extraordinary leaper. As Rucker observed, "Seivers played just three seasons for Tennessee’s varsity team and was placed on the All-America team after two of those seasons. Some who have followed Tennessee football closely for decades — including at least one person who spent decades in the program — still swear that Seivers is definitely one of the best pure pass-catchers in Vols history. His 117 catches and 1,194 yards were program records when he graduated but have since been surpassed. But no one who surpassed him was a two-time All-American" (Top five wide receivers in Tennessee Vols football history).
