Only needs 13 receptions to become the 11th player in NFL History (second tight end) to reach 1,000 career catches.

I would like for him to surpass Tony Gonzales but that will never happen. Gonzales is light years ahead of him in receptions, t.d.'s, etc. etc.

Gonzalez is 6 years older than Witten and is retired but has 325 more receptions, 4,000 more yards and 60 more t.d.'s. than Witten as a tight end.
Can Witten play 6 more years and average 54 receptions per year? Average 800 yards per years and average 10 t.d.'s per year? Doudt it!
He will eventually have to share time with another Tight End. He will likely have an injury within that time period and miss a game or two. Will the offense be more run orientated in the future and him get less opporutnities?

One of my top 5 favorite Vols of all time. Best tight end to play the game, period. Has a better skill set than Gonzales had IMO

I don't know about that but as far as the hall of fame is concerned, I feel pretty good about his chances considering that Shannon Sharpe got in. Witten is a much better blocker than Sharpe was and has now put up even better numbers as a receiver. The only thing that may keep him out is what a mediocre to bad team he has played for throughout his career. The Cowboys have won two playoff games since he has been in the league... and only two since 1997 for that matter. (and I'm a huge Cowboys fan btw).

Tony averaged 889 yards per season over 17 years.
If Witten finishes out at 800 this year, which he's on pace for, it would put his career average at 869 yards per season. Could he catch Tony? Possibly. Will he? Probably not.

Tony averaged close to 7TDs per season over those years, Witten around 5TDs.

Either way he might end up being the 2nd greatest TE to play the game to this point.

What? I love Witten, he's an all time great and first ballot hall of famer, but which particular skills does he possess that are better than Gonzales'? Without in any way trying to disparage Jason, I gotta respectfully disagree.

This KB. He's a matchup nightmare for linebackers and is one of the most unselfish players in the league. I just personally think that Gonzales was more of a pure pass catcher compared to Witten.

As a Vol TE Witten was the best, bar none, but Gonzales was unbelievable in all facets. Pretty good BB player too.

GO VOLS!

Or maybe get traded to the Saints...

I hate the Patriots but there has never been a tight end as dominant as Gronk.

Who cares man? Witten is one of the best TEs to ever play. Way to play Johnny Raincloud.
