WR Recruiting under Dooley

So if he's not a good HC, what's your opinion of Dooley? Or does everything that happens in a coaching regime in the first 3-4 years not count?

Back on subject, if we're going purely on Rivals ratings and potential, which most of you are, Dooley has recruited well.

Come on now... Where did I say that things in the first 3-4 years not matter? Of course they matter. If Dooley can't win 8 games this year, fire him. I think coaches deserve leniency. I think looking at the situation Dooley took over, it's not fair to judge him after the first two seasons. I think Kiffin did OK in 2009 (especially with Crompton) but that situation was still fragile, and if you remember, Kiffin was already talking about how tough 2010 was gonna be. I think he has walked into an elite situation at USC. I think he may still be a good coach, but I don't think it is a given. I think Dooley has a ways to show that he is a good coach. But just judging his record so far at La Tech/UT does not prove he is a bad coach IMO.

Maybe I cannot overcome my blindness to TN football, but I feel like that from a pure talent standpoint that there is only 1 team on the schedule that is better and that is Alabama. I have tried to look at the experience of what each team has coming back and the talent in the starting lineup and depth without blindness.

When I look at each team, I think there is without question we have better talent than Mississippi St., Missouri, NC St., Kentucky, Vandy, and the three OOC scrubs.

I think we are at the very least on par with Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina.

USCe and UGA are definitely better than us. That being said, I don't think there is a team on our schedule, including Bama, that is a guarenteed loss. But I only see 5, maybe 6, guarenteed wins.

From what aspect?

UGA is severely lacking at RB and OL. At WR we are better than them and at QB at least even.

On D they are stout, but by the time they play us about 4 of their key contributors will not have played a game this season.

USCe? They have a QB that has not proven he can throw. They have a stud RB that is coming off a severe injury. They have a WR corp that is nowhere near ours. Their O-Line lost 2 or 3 starters I believe, but it should be good.

On D, that D-line is nasty. I like our LBs. I like their DBs.

It's not like we don't have question marks too. Struggled to stop the run last year. Struggled to force turnovers. Transition to a 3-4.

Running game? No comment. Teams will be trying to force Bray into mistakes. He will have to prove he has matured.

That being said, once the season starts, many of these question marks might be answered.

I agree completely with your breakdown. That is why I think anything less than 9 regular season wins this year, with their schedule, would be a disappointment.

Expecting them to beat all the teams they have more talent than and just winning 1 out of the 4 games where the team has equal to better talent is not asking too much at all IMO and it's something Dooley is going to have to do soon.

Agree but looking at talent vs. talent we are on par with UGA, and we have more than USCe. Dooley just has to prove he can coach because that would be the only missing element if we lose this year assuming last year's injuries do not happen.

I absolutely agree with the both of you. This is the year that there is enough talent/experience on the field to pull off some of these could win/slightly underdog games. Take care of business and win AT LEAST one of those four games and we are back in business!

How many teams with more talent than Tennessee has Dooley beaten?

None, but what point does that prove using a 2 year sample size of a gutted, young team? 1st year we have depth and size to feasibly compete. Let the season shake out before deeming Dooley a failure.

If they are, it's not by the margin you are suggesting. We lacked depth against those teams. Not an issue this year. Our offense has the talent to be the best in the conference. End of story, this is a make or break year for Dooley, the talent is there and ready for some wins.

Who bought those guys to Knoxville?

Same POS that walked out less than a month before signing day...what is your point? Kiffin should get credit for 2 of his assistant coaches staying at Tennessee instead of walking out with Monte, Coach O & company?

Dooley may not be the worst recruiter, but he's not remotely on the level of Kiffin or Fulmer in his prime.

I'm not old enough to really remember Majors' recruiting ability, but it's ridiculous to act like it's impossible to get guys to come to Tennessee.

This statement explains a lot. Majors took the job after 1976 season ended. Tennessee became relevant again in 1985. 9 full seasons as HC. Recruiting is not difficult for Tennessee when we are winning.

Unless his ability to evaluate talent is very, very good, his recruiting has to improve a lot.

He has already proven his ability to evaluate talent is better than both Fulmer & Kiffin.

How many teams with more talent than Tennessee has Dooley beaten?

How many teams with more talent did Kiffin beat in '09? Fulmer in '08?

The roster got significantly worse from 2009 to 2010, but you expect same or better results from Dooley with less talent/depth/upper classmen?

Give this staff a chance. 2012 will be better. 2013 will be much better.

1. I'm certainly not defending Fulmer.

2. Georgia and South Carolina were probably more talented in 2009.

3 I can't speak for the 70's, but I know it doesn't take 9 years to build a program today.

4. Of course this year will be better. It doesn't mean it will be good.

5. Dooley gets this year to show something or he's done. That simple.

Your Randy Shannon example is an oversimplification. CLK is hands down a better recruiter, I would argue better Coaching mind, and he can develop QBs. He also showed in his 1 year here he can hang with the top coaches in the country. He also has already bested Shannons best year by turning in a 10 win season last year.

I think he will do well with the talent from the top 3 recruiting class he pulls year after year.

Bump reference to Kiffin. Funny how things change.
