i love cracker barrel...only problem is that there are none is California!

I'm trying to think of a high end restaurant other than CB that sell greens, pinto beans, gravy/biscuits and sweet tea off of most interstate exits while I'm on the road traveling...

Ruth's Chris? The Orangery?

is that some sort of travelers delight? if that was the best I could do on the road, I'd probably stay home.

If you're implying that the only option on the road is Cracker Barrel, other than high end fare, you need to get out more. Maybe avoid the Chatt / Knox trek for a while.

probably the two least appetizing items on the menu.

Vtx, nobody in America misses V&B's more than I. The walk from my condo at The Pembroke never seemed far when I knew deep fried delight was waiting.

Wouldn't have figured you for a deep fried kind of guy... Late night hunger pangs should be solved by a IHOP type of establishment!!

"Chicken in the sack with hot pepper jack, Bill." I loved that place. I used to live on White Ave down behind the Jessie Harris Building, and it was as though a benevolent god had thrown V&B's right there in between alcohol and my apartment just for my benefit. I was sometimes in there four nights a week.

I guess it was inevitable, but it was still sad to watch Bill move steadily into the background. First he got what we called his "handlers," so that you no longer ordered directly from him, and then finally he was off the grill entirely. I still tried to stop in there whenever I was back in town and near campus, so it was a nasty shock when I was walking by last year to see it's now something called the Campus Deli. Just damn.

I mean, it might be okay. But I ate at Vic and Bill's for almost 20 years. I miss that place even more than Sam and Andy's.

It's an hour and fifteen minute drive. You have to stop and eat?

(Still trying to wrap my head around the idea that any particular Cracker Barrel would be "legendary.")

We stop @ CB on the way to K town anytime it's a kickoff of 2 or before. It's not that we "have" to, we just don't eat breakfast and stop at the CB on the way.

We frequented the Sweetwater CB quote often. Now, it's Lenoir City.

I would gouge my own eyes out before I would eat at a Subway.

Thank you. It baffles me the number of people that think Subway is the greatest place on earth. I love sandwiches, but Subway is the last resort in places I'll go for a sandwich. Bread that's a couple of days old, meat that was processed six months ago. Give me Jersey Mike's or the local town deli. Every city worth stopping in has a local deli restaurant.

As for CB, it's good that someone serves southern cooking, but it's far from what I would call great, even good for that matter, southern cooking.

IMO I would just as soon go to the DinnerBell. They are just up the next exit in Sweetwater, and to tell you the truth, I believe the food Is better than CB!

What is the matter with CB... are you that uppity that you can't enjoy a decent country meal every now and then?

I work for CB at the home office here in Lebanon and I can tell you we don't shut down a location just because someone's having a bad day. I don't know the specifics of this one but I could probably look into it for ya. I'll take a look at the future openings list & see if ya'll are on it. I think we're up to like 567 rest. since 1969 and they didn't do it making dumb, random decisions....

Cracker Barrels chicken and dumplings are delicious. and bacon and eggs and bisquits are good too. the only cracker barrel near me is in commerce, which is closer to athens than it is gainesville. since we never get to go there, sunday brunch at the Cracker Barrel is kind of like an event for us. it's not that the food is THAT good, it's just that we're eating good ole' southern food with family and friends who love us. it's more of a sentimental thing than anything... as for subway, I'd rather eat trash out of a dumpster than go in there and order a sandwich. subway sucks, quiznos sucks; firehouse, jersey mikes or a local deli are the only choices for a good sub.

I never liked Subway either. I always favored Quizno's.

I can tell you it is the best company by far I have ever worked for....every single one of the hundreds here at the home office are an absolute joy to be around!

I get tired of eating the same food all the time but I have my favorites like the chicken fried chicken or whatever we call it now & the steak and biscuits. Some of our food is bland in my opinion but it's consistent and of the best quality we can find....

They are very, very, tight on the gold cards now...no more freebies. :search:

Subway is disgusting. they have slimy meat, jagoff kids working behind the counter, and i've seen a few around here with some bad health scores. as for Quiznos, replace stoned with jagoff and there is your difference.

We all like going to CB here, but it really depends on what you like. I love their ham (country fried that is), and their breakfast is good too. If I'm in the mood for food like that, it's a great place go with the fireplace going etc. Sometimes you're just in the mood for stuff like that... mashed potatos, ham, biscuits, etc. Can't get that at O'Charley's. :)
