Would you trade Heup for any of our rival's coaches?

Among our rivals, just Kirby. DeBoer has a more impressive accomplishment than Heupel does, but I’m not sure he is better or that he is good enough to upset the apple cart with a switch.

I do want to say though that a lot of Vol fans said out loud that they wouldn’t have traded Butch Jones for any coach in the country, when in reality they should have traded him for the clap if someone made the offer.

I don't get all the love for people like Smart, Day, and Sark. When you are in a position where you can go out and load your roster with almost nothing but 4 and 5 star in-state boys who dreamed of playing at your school all their lives, you're naturally going to look like a freaking coaching genius. Tell you what, let's let Smart coach Kentucky for 3 or 4 years, and if he wins big, I'll be a believer.
You don’t get all the love for championship coaches? Kirby Smart has won multiple championships at a place that hadnt won one in 40 years, is still in his prime, has his team in championship contention yearly, and has absolutely destroyed Heupel every time they have faced off.

For that matter, let Heupel win big at a place like Kentucky. Heupel has never won big at such a mediocre program. He hasn’t even won anything of consequence at a far superior program than Kentucky. By your standard, nobody in the country is any good at coaching football.

Obviously this is just one of those offseason, can we please talk about football topics. I saw it asked on Redditt and thought it might stir some conversation here while waiting for the season to start. Just for clarity I really love our coach and am glad he is here. I actually think this topic made me appreciate him more after looking at what is out there.

For me:
Smart: yeah, probably. I hate to admit it but the dude is on top of the game right now.
DeBoer: Nah. I don't think he would be a step back and proved at Washington he can win but I like Heup better right now
Napier: Hell no.

Other coaches I would trade Heup for? That is tough. Day has the current NC but is he great or is Ohio State talent great? I am not so sure. Sark has been good at Texas but has a history. Guys like Kelly and Franklin are past their prime. I think the only two guys in addition to Smart would be Dabo and maybe Dan Lanning. I am not saying Heup is the 4th best coach in the country right now but he is already established here and I would really need a proven winner to go through the pain of another coaching change.
I honestly was about to say smart but I also wonder how much of his success can be attributed to him being a Georgia guy. I think id still take him though , tough coach and a top recruiter

The point being that other coaches at UGA didn't get those athletes but Smart does. Heupel seems to be focused on 3 Star players and appears turned off by the portal. He's acting like he's still at UCF and operating with Frosts recruits. Writing is on the wall for Heupel unless he starts cleaning out the dead wood on the staff and getting serious with recruiting otherwise he's dead man walking.
LMAO...........

This board (and college football generally) is full of people who will only be impressed with a coach if he wins national titles with random guys off the street. I don't know how many times I've heard "So-and-so is a great coach, but he's overrated because he always has the better team." I mean yes, duh, isn't that the point? It's like someone saying that "So-and-so wasn't a great General - he just always had more soldiers at the key spot than his opponent did. If he was really good, he would have won all those battles even though he was way outnumbered." It's absurd.

What great coach, either today or historically, consistently won a bunch of games with teams who were less talented than their opponents? The only one that comes to my mind is Bill Snyder.

The ironic thing is how little it takes for a Tennessee coach to impress the Sunshine Pumpers and how impossible it is for them to be impressed by anyone else.

It takes little to impress them...at first. If Heupel continues winning at the clip he's won for the next couple of years, they'll be ready to move on because he "can't get over the hump." Particularly if the random road stinker loss keeps emerging.

The fanbase as a whole might be ready, but the sunshine pumpers who are saying “Kirby Smart isn’t that good” would hold on to the bitter end for any coach. There was a sizable contingent that wanted to keep Pruitt as late as New Year’s Day of 2021.

I don’t get all of this love for Smart. He has the best players, great. If you would have swapped Smart and Heupel 4 years ago, I think you would basically get the same results for UT and Georgia. In fact, I’m not convinced Smart would have done quite as well at UT. I don’t think he would have beaten Bama in 2022. It’s easy to look good with the best players. I don’t think smart brings anything to the table in terms of game day coaching that other top coaches don’t. Same with Sark. He seems to make some bone headed decisions every year and talent covers up mistakes. Not a fan of Kiffin at all but he’s a better offensive coach than Smart. I think Pedersen who retired a few years ago is the best coach I ever saw in terms of elevating players to play beyond their ability. Very few I’d trade Heupel for, but he’s far from perfect too.
Because it took over 4 decades of failing UGA coaches having access to the same players that Kirby has had access to for them to be the best program in college football. Kirby doesn’t have to be the best Gameday coach on the chalk board to win games . He has to have talent, a formula and be a master manipulator and psychologist. He knows all the right buttons to push and when to push them.

I think he is a good coach perhaps even a great coach. However, I don't understand...

Milton over Hooker
No QB run attack with Nico
Loss at Arky in '24
Very predictable alternating run calls in '24
Prep for Ohio State game in CFP

I'm sure there are UGA, UF, Ala, etc. fans who question details about their coaches as well. But when you get paid north of $5M annually, you should expect a lot of scrutiny from fan bases who live for Saturdays in the fall.

I’d get Kirby just for recruiting and calling defense. Keep Heupel as OC and let him run and recruit offense. We’d be unstoppable.

Can I just trade for Kirby's recruiting and keep Heupel?

This. I'm going to give a possibly unpopular opinion and state that X's and O's Heupel is right there with Kirby. He just doesn't have a roster full of five stars. Can he get there? I hope so. That will ultimately decide whether he gets a natty or not, I don't think that it will be for lack of coaching.

I wouldn’t trade him for Smart because I don’t respect the lack of integrity and discipline around his program, but football wise UGA are the gold standard right now. He’s the only one I’d put above Heupel rn if I was ranking coaches. I wouldn’t even put Dabo or Day or anyone else above him right now. I’d like him to get our explosiveness back into the offense, but as far as overall management of the team, there’s very little to complain about. He completely turned us around in short order.

I think both Smart and Sark are elite coaches. Idk that either would be more successful at Tennessee though. The fact is Texas and Georgia are much easier to stockpile talent at. Those are probably the only two I would even consider.
