Leach is gimmick guy. Chip Kelly is a gimmick guy, will never be successful in the NFL or the SEC. We just got rid of a failed gimmick guy in Butch Jones who failed in the SEC. Leach would be a massive failure in the SEC no matter where he coached. The SEC is about power football on either side of the LOS, gimmicks fail when you get hit in the mouth over and over again.
The fans will get behind whoever Fulmer picks as new HC. They were more upset by who was doing the picking..
Chad Morris is a good coach. I don't think he's who Tennessee needs right now but wouoldn't be a awful hire..
Think about this. It's not just about Saban. It's about Saban, Jimbo Fisher, Mullen, Smart and maybe Lane Kiffin if another SEC picks him up.
Look at Texas A & M and take a look at Jimbo's resume. Let me put it this way. In manufacturing, you have several openings for your plant. Folks apply for the job and you are looking and separating resume for future interviews. Some resumes will be looked at and filed away never to be looked at again. Why? Because they do not and will never meet your GOALS for your company. What are your goals and how do you plan on getting there and WHO can help your company to Achieve those goals. Why is searching for a football coach be any different? One aspect of our immediate goal at UT is to WIN and be competitive in the SEC. Look around you folks. Saban, Jimbo Fisher, Mullen, and Smart are not one of those resumes you would just file away and never look at again. I hope you get my point. I really don't give a rat's ass if the new pick has UT ties or not. But can he WIN in the SEC? Can he defeat these coaches on regular bases? This is what we need to concentrate on. What are our goals and who do we need to hire to get us there? It's in Fulmer's hand and time is running out. Make a wise choice. Forget about the money and hire the best there is available based on what UT goals are. And can that person take us to the promised land of winning and recruiting? Be wise because now Mr. Fulmer you own the future of UT football.
Think about guys this board has determined can't coach by their record. Chad Morris is a perfect example. Forget that he was a brilliant OC at Clemson and took over a terrible SMU program that was winless in former NFL coach June Jones last season, his record isn't pretty so we don't want him.
Another example is Gene Stallings. His record at Texas A&M was a losing one. I laughed when Bama hired him yet it took Tennessee about 6 yrs to finally beat him with some of the most talented teams in Tennessee history. Ditto Bill Curry at Alabama.
So don't just look at their record on Wikipedia and determine someone can coach or not. Oh that coach you don't want with a 6-14 record? That was Johnny Majors record at Iowa State after two years when the large majority of Vol fans wanted him to be named HC when Dickey left a loaded roster and program. Woodruff chose 28 yr old Bill Battle instead and the rest is history.
