Would you be on board with a Cutcliff hire?

Wonder if all of those who lazily dismissed him as too old, know that he's 6 months younger than Saban?

Why do you say lazily? A bit judgy, aren't we? Saban did not have triple bypass heart surgery in 2005. Those surgeries don't last forever.

Given choice of Jones or Cut, I'd choose Cut. He's done an admirable job at Duke (not football school), and his discipline and attention to detail is well known. Would be somewhat underwhelming hire, but could be a bridge to better days. We're not devoid of good options. Jones not making it past the season, whether now, or after SC or Bama or KY. Hate it for Jones, and appreciate what he's done to shore up the program from Dooley, but it's not hard to see that he's in over his head... Saturday was the beginning of the end.

Coach Cut is not leaving Duke until he retires. He is entrenched there and loves it

1) Because half of those who dismissed him as too old have no idea how old he actually is.

2) It's looking more like Stoops retired due to a health issue and he would be a top candidate for some on here.

I would be fine with it. He was a great coach at OLE MISS, and brought Duke back from nothing.

Curious how VN would feel about moving toward a coaching staff with deeper UT ties versus some more up and coming guys.

I imagine he would want to bring his current staff too which many would be underwhelmed with.

Ummm no. They just got beat by Miami as bad as we got beat by Georgia, and they were 4-8 last year, and 1 -7 in the conference.

He will make someone a pretty good OC one day -- not a good head coach.

going after and hiring Cutcliffe would simply mean we're buying time to hire the "future" coach. hiring him would most assuredly guarantee another hire w/in 5 years.

Can we please limit our search to coaches who haven’t already been fired from another college job?

He got fired for refusing to make changes to his coaching staff, not because he hadn’t done a good job.

They hired him to keep Eli from coming to Tennessee. And once Eli graduated, they were ready to move on.

Does that mean no Chip Kelly then? He jumped ship before he could be fired, got a show-cause for his troubles. Does that count?

9-3 - 8-4 Yea, the same as anyone else for most of the time. Now and then you could see 10 or 11 wins and every 15-20 years a shot at the championship.

We might as well keep Butch then. He recruits better and they would win about the same amount of games. Some of you are too happy with mediocrity.

Actually, I would be ok with this if it were viewed in the proper perspective. Before you decide, listen to my reasoning.

First, Butch has done what he should have been brought in to do, re-establish recruiting, get talent on the field and the bench, win a couple of bowl games, and a couple of 9 win seasons. He should have been a stepping stone, given very specific goals, and not been given an extension.

That being said, we are starting to backslide. We could bring Cutcliffe in with very specific goals, and a very specific plan. Build on the foundation, teach the talent, and continue to build, give us 8 and 9 win seasons for the next 5 years to 8 years or so, while mentoring a protege or two to take over when he retires. Someone that will take us to that next level.

This would have buy in from former players, who can get buy in from the fans. Big time boosters and AD would need to be brought around, as they are short on long term planning experience and ability. Plus, a place in the AD office would need to be offered up front to Cutcliffe for when he retires.

That is the only way I would be ok with it, but it could work, especially if you draw up a 10 year plan, talk to former players who are now coaches, like Tee, Marion, Jay, etc and let them know the plan and that we will be looking to bring back Tennessee style football, and that we would want to pass the torch to them, and what that timeline would look like.

Again, you have to plan for 8 and 9 win seasons, with middle of the road bowl games, knowing you have a plan to be competing closely in those 3 and 4 loses each year. And plan to be competing for championships again by year 10.

It's not what I want, but it's realistic, and gives you a roadmap forward.

Fair enough.
