Would you be happy at 7-5 this year?

I'd be okay with 7-5 with a bowl victory.

This.... and that would be progress in year two with 70% of the team made up of freshmen and sophomores.

A better record would be great, but anyone expecting more is setting themselves up for a huge disappointment.

Well, if fans are going to be okay with being a 7-5 or 6-6 team, then UTAD better be okay with lots of empty seats, rampant dissatisfaction and a serious decline in gameday experience. I expect better, so I'm probably setting myself up for a huge disappointment.

Agreed the level of apathy around here is depressing

I tend to agree with you. I think a lot of people have majorly high expectations right now. It will take time to get back to the top. If all the right pieces fall into place I'd say look out in 2012.

I wouldn't be satisfied with 7-5. No one should be satisfied with that. I think 9-3 is not out of the possibility.

Those "majorly high expectations" have been in place for more than a decade.

I can live with 7-5 as long as we compete in every game and avoid embarrassments like Oregon, Georgia, and Alabama last year. UAB was disturbing as well, so none of those either.

I still think 7-5 is most likely. But as Camp nears my orange colored glasses get darker.

6-0 going into Tuscaloosa? Beat UF, and with the momentum that will give the team, and the off date for extra coaching and preparation, Id give the team a 40% chance of pulling wins against both UGA and LSU at home. But beating UF is the key.

9/3 Montana tbd
9/10 Cincinnati 3:30pm
9/17 @Florida 3:30pm
10/1 Buffalo tbd
10/8 Georgia tbd
10/15 LSU tbd

Granted, 3-3 is more likely than 6-0. But with so many games at home, and an early off date right in the middle of this slate, 6-0 isn’t totally unbelievable. The back half looks really tough with those games against @Bama USC, and @Ark all coming after the brutal October slate, and no rest. So we better be at least 4-2 after the first 6 because those three games will be really hard to win.

Yep.

Dont count the Vols out. We could very well be 3-3 but 6-0 is also possible. I'm going with 5-1.

There's a difference between accepting mediocrity and being cautiously optimistic.

Our beloved program took a huge hit the past 3+ years so I think it is unreasonable to expect a complete turn around in 2 years. While we were going downhill other programs were getting better. It will take time to recover.

That being said, I am not at all going to be happy with continuous 7-5 seasons. However, I could live with a 7-5 season this year as long as we should real improvement such as, beating a top SEC program, beating all the tteams we SHOULD beat, and playing a well coached cohesive unit. If we lose some games, I can deal with that, as long as we didn't lose because we just gave up.

Pretty much this.

I'd be happy with 7-5 as long as the team shows marked improvement.

I could easily talk myself into seeing UT as a 9-3 or better team...but then I start looking at what's really there. 7-5 with this bunch and this schedule, I would be ok with.

Its a process. The right kind of 7-5 season (maybe with a bowl win) could be a solid step in the right direction.

7-5 is what i'm expecting, but i wouldn't necessarily be happy with it. 8-4 would make me happy. 9-3 would make me ecstatic.

Curious to see if the fan base here would be satisfied with a 7-5 record in year 2.

I think that is the most likely scenario for this year and in my opinion that would suffice for a good year considering the lack of depth and experience on this team. However, I would also expect us to be close in all our losses and not have any blowouts.

I won't be "satisfied" until we are competing for championships again.

With that said, however, there has to be some sense of reality in expectations. I just reviewed the 2011 schedule, and the conference portion is very tough. 8-4, while being competitive in the losses, would seem like a very good season IMO. 7-5 would not be a terrible effort, either, as long as (again) we are competitive in the losses).

No Tennessee fan should be happy to be 7-5, not with the $$$$ that football program has, and anyone paying an average of $60-$75 per ticket shouldn't be happy losing 5 games.

7-5 is what I expect, and I would be happy.
Ecstatic at 8-4

7-5 any other year besides next, and I will come unglued. This is last of the low expectation seasons for me.

I guess I should clarify. With everything that this program has gone through the last few years, coaching changes etc, and especially the roster depletion that comes along with it, are why my expectations are so low. I remember when losing more than 1 game was a failure of a season. I never in my life thought I would be happy with 7-5 for a Vols football team.

I'd still be pissed 4 times this year.:)

True. I may catch some hell for this, but i think 8-4 is the lowest record we can possibly have to show improvement. Getting games in the win column is what it's all about, not how close we came to defeating a team. Im throwing the moral victory stuff out the window. With that said, with a great JUCO class this year and the majority of our starters having significant playing time, im expecting a NC run in 2012.

if the 7 teams included Florida Georgia LSU and bama then yes...but that'd leave for some pretty hard to swallow losses..090311 just needs. to. hurry. now.
