Would S16 feel….

That is the definition of probable. It means, you have different outcomes, but PROBABLY they will make the S16. You are confusing the
issue by throwing in possibilities. It is possible that the plane could blow up, but it is NOT PROBABLE. It PROBABLY won't.
I don’t know any objective observer who can honestly say, “Tennessee will probably make the sweet sixteen.” You’re lying to yourself if you think they’re a shoo-in.

The only teams you can realistically say that about are Michigan, Arizona, Houston, and Duke. If any of them don’t make it, it would be a monumental upset.

Overachieved. I feel like we are on par to get rolled in the second game. Floor is first round loss, ceiling is E8.

I'll feel a lot better about not getting bounced in the first round if we stay out of the dreaded 5 seed line

It’s tough. Sweet 16, I think, would be considered a success for this team when you take everything up to this point into context; however, there was a time in the pre-season where despite the concerns about a reliable 2-guard, we felt this team could be the deepest Barnes’ team.

Thinking about that and bowing out before the E8 sucks, but now that we know what this team is a Sweet 16 is good. Still, with every year that passes by during this program’s best stretch in UT basketball history, not getting to that first Final Four stings more and more every year and makes you wonder if it will ever happen for Tennessee.

I know I am in the minority, but I don't think deciding whether the whole season is a success based on the first weekend of the tournament is a good way to look at it. It will always be disappointing to me that we got swept by Ky this year and as far as the Sweet 16 thing, well we've been there and done that. It's fine, but it doesn't give me a great sense of achievement. Hopefully, we still have a signature win or two left in the arsenal, otherwise this year will feel very meh to me.

What a mindset.

I, too, find it hard to judge the entire season on a single postseason tournament. Usually, we are talking about a great regular season undermined by a NCAAT flame out. Rarely have we had the disappointing regular season highlighted by an unexpected NCAAT run. Cuonzo's last team is probably the only one I can think of off the top of my head. That's a tough way to judge a season. If this team makes an E8, it will be tough to be disappointed, even if it's also tough to wash away the disappointing losses.

I'd say sweet 16 is the goal. E8 would be over achieving. I think we can realistically beat anyone if Jakobi and Nate are playing well, and JP is healthy. Beating Houston and being toe to toe with Duke in the exhibition convinced me of that. We also have the possibility of getting bounced in the second round.

Sweet 16 is a success.

This team can lose round 1 and make the Final Four and neither would be a huge surprise.

Maybe the Gillespie/Ament duo in March has that Kemba Walker UCONN magic

Expand please

Getting to a sweet 16 would just be meh is crazy talk to me. Placing more importance on regular season wins than advancing in the tourney just seems so foreign to me.

If we would have beat UK twice but get beat in the 2nd round. Would you consider it a successful season?

I am with you in that minority group, which I think includes mostly long time college basketball fans. I've never been a huge fan of the expanded, one and done tournament.

Yeah, I would be happier with that. It would also have us tied with Florida at the top of the league with a good chance of winning the regular season championship.

Choose one of the following:

1) Win SEC regular season title but lose in S16

2) Finish SEC slate 9-9 but advance to Elite 8

Elite 8. If the ultimate goal is to win a National Championship I like the choice that gets us closer.

Is your thinking that we will never come close to winning a NC so therefore having better success in the regular season is more important to you?

Sweet 16 with a shot at the Elite 8 is where I would put this group if they get to the tournament healthy. The free throw shooting and ability of the bigs to finish will be the things that determine how far we go, because you know the defense and rebounding will be there and Ament is getting better and better.
I would add the ability for Gillespie and Boswell to effectively manage a game during crunch time is also critical. They have to be cool and calculated under pressure.
