Would Jon Gruden be interested in job?

an nfl coach doesn't have to worry about what the players are doing? Ask the Bears if they're happy they no longer have to worry about Tank Johnson, or if the Falcons wished they knew what Mike Vick was doing off the field. Or ask if anyone worries about what Leonard Little does late at night. Or we could even ask Jimmy Johnson or Barry Switzer if they were concerned what the Cowboys were up to during the '90s.

NFL coaches work roughly 12,777 times harder than their college counterparts. That's one of the main reasons Spurrier failed. He wasn't willing to do the work necessary to keep up with his NFL peers.

I'm sure they do work harder. My point was is that it's just a different kind of work. I've clearly never been a part of recruiting or drafting an athlete but I've got to imagine that it's tougher to judge talent coming out of high school versus coming out of a top D-I program(granted not all NFL prospects come from top D-I programs but I think you get my point)

Ehhh look at the draft flops compared to recruiting flops. It's probably even.

The Bears D seems to still be doing fine without Tank Johnson, it's their O that is worthless. If the Falcons could've realized what they had in Schaub, the Vick issue wouldn't be AS big of a deal. Even though Vick was obviously the franchise QB. Leonard Little is still playing last time I checked so it didn't seem to effect him too much(although I think he should have went to jail). Touche' on the 'Boys, that was a mess

i never talked about how the playing was with or without said players. But if you don't think the Bears are trying to make sure they don't sign someone else who is going to do nothing but get suspensions and stay in legal trouble, you need to pay more attention. You think the Titans are looking to sign the next PacMan anytime soon?

The Titans knew exactly what they were getting with Adam Jones. They felt the reward outweighed the risk. Not the first time it's happened, won't be the last.

Al Davis and Jerry Jones are probably some of the most notorious owners out there that will take a chance on people with dubious backgrounds. Jerry Jones still kicks himself to this day for skipping over Randy Moss, which is why he jumped at the chance to bring in T.O. Al Davis jumped at the chance to get Randy Moss when he could, too bad he didn't have a QB that could get the ball to him. Robert Kraft appears to also be one of those types of owners in the past several years with players like Moss and Corey Dillon.

The Ravens didn't seem to mind too much that Ray Lewis was accused of murder. I think that's a pretty good case that coaches and organizations don't watch over their athletes nearly as close.

Cases can obviously be made for or against the fact that NFL coaches either care or don't. But it never seems to affect the morale of a team in the League like it does in college since an NFL team can bring in another athlete to replace him

to have all the talk in the k-town, why is there no talk in tampa newsprint and talk radio? stinks to me

Great point IBleedOrange.

Choose which one you want.

Option A: Someone that has recent proven success as a head coach at the collegiate level

Option B: Someone that has never been a collegiate head coach. Won a Super Bowl in 2002, but has a 29-38 record since.

Case closed.

after reading this post I feel certain that you are channeling the spirit of Teddyhead. You should go back and edit this out because that has to be the dumbest statements I have ever read on here (and that's saying quite a bit). Do you really think NFL success dictates collegiate success?

Rex,
There is no correlation between my options. They are discrete choices. For example, would you rather hire Bob Stoops (option A) or Jon Gruden (option B) to coach your college team.

The previous discussion in this thread was the proclamation that Gruden is most qualified coach for UT. I believe that to be incorrect on many levels.

yeah, bobby bowden has shown time and time again he cares what his players do off the field.

If he can turn Tampa around, I think he can turn UT around.
Yeah maybe. But he won't take a step backwards to coach college. Why should he. He is making far more now than we would pay him. Besides i think he will stay in the nfl. We need someone like the USF coach.

who will be even tougher to get out of Tampa than Gruden

As a new member of this website, I don't want to stir up anything, but Jon Gruden and his wife Cindy are the listed owners of 3 pieces of property in Jefferson County. Nothing in Knox County or Sevier County. The last of those 3 pieces of property was purchased in September of 2006. For the record, I don't know if he's the best choice for our Vols or not, but I sure do believe we need a change.

Bob Stoops is as likely to coach the Vols as Pete Carroll, Bill Belicheck, or Tony Dungy. Why would BS even be in a coversation concerning the UT job? That OU gig is 20x better.

Gruden or Leavitt at USF would take the UT job for the right money ($4 mil for Gruden, $3 mil for Leavitt).

yeah because we all know Leavitt was just lying when he turned down offers from the other schools by saying he wants to turn USF into a national powerhouse and he's not leaving there
