Would Jon Gruden be interested in job?

I don't know why so many think Gruden is a pipe dream. He's been to the top of the mountain top in the NFL and he surely doen't need to have a lot more money. Iwould imagine he is at the age that he wants to establish some roots in his later years and East TN is obviously his choice since he has bought property here and his wife still has family here. College football and UT would offer him a new challenge to feed his competitive nature in a place that would allow his family the comforts of that home connection. I think that he and his family would be very happy here and i don't think it would take a big payday to do it.

I'm pretty sure Steve, and Rick are turning the programs around at their schools after being in the NFL, grated they both had proven college coaching experience before

Thats my point they suck as head coaches moving up or down. A coordinator is a different story.

Pete Carroll was a head coach in the NFL twice. Please go litter someone else's forum with your ill informed blather. I'm sure isuckuptotonydungy.com could use more posters.

Another example; Rich Brooks was a former NFL head coach and I would say he's doing well at Kentucky right now. I don't see any relation to guys not doing well "moving up or down".

7-9 in the NFL then left to be Defensive Coordinator

Then back down to KY.

All these coaches have little to no success. We got that now

Ask an Alabama fan if Saban is having success. They'll all start talking about how they haven't had a 4th quarter come back in "x" years... and they did last week with Saban. Ask a SC fan when the last time they actually had hope of winning the East was, they're getting closer.

Plus all married men have to do what makes wifey happy. I'm sure Mrs. Gruden would love living in TN again.

I think aging players and salary cap wrecked a good team, not Gruden. The cap had something to do with stripping players along with trying to get younger. His solid QB was one of those 'old' players also. As far as the draft, I can't blame them for taking a guy like Cadillac Williams as we have all seen this guy first hand as Vols fans. Seeing as there is no salary cap in college (especially at Bama) and age is not an issue than I think he would do just fine. He should recruit well based on his work ethic and name recognition alone. I can't see how anyone would compare NFL win-loss numbers to college numbers. Do you think Gruden would do well with New England's talent? Do you think Fulmer could win a Superbowl with the same Bucs team? I would take Gruden in a second.

Gruden did not strip the team away, consistently, of multiple 1st round picks. Since he started in 2001, TB has not had 1st rounders in 2 of those years. The coach, many times, has input but not the decision of who to draft. That is one of the problems Jerry Jones and Jimmy Johnson had in Dallas. And pretty much EVERYONE with Al Davis.

Carnell Williams' problem was that he came from a 2-back system, and didn't have anyone at TB to really share the load. But still.. 290 carries isn't "running into the ground" and he averaged 4.1 ypc. Moot point though.

I posted the following in the Cowher thread. It deserves to be here as well I think....

"Coaching philosophies aside, you are talking about bringing NFL guys to, besides Notre Dame, the most completely dependent on nationwide recruiting, program in major college ball. You simply must have someone who is through and through a nut about recruiting. NFL coaches have not been out there doing that kind of stuff."

didnt seem to hurt pete carroll or charlie weiss

I hate "secret sources" too so you know I feel weird saying this stuff. But this person hasn't been wrong with me yet, and he's a guy on this board I respect a lot.

You are one of those guys for me, and I have to say that I was really surprised when you conceded that this is a real possibility. Very interesting.

at TN, you do need a guy that can recruit and that has a sound coaching mind. because talent and coaching in the SEC is what wins. you can't have one or hte other and hope for the best anymore.

This is why I still think Strong from Florida would be a good look.

maybe.....i know he's been successful as a DC at SC and FL, i don't know all that much else about him though, so i'll refrain froma thumbs up or down at this time and put him in the "we'll see" category.
