Would Coach Heupel start a true freshman QB ?

The 82 Miami Hurricanes had a qb room with Mark Richt, Jim Kelly, Vinny Testaverde and Bernie Kosar plus another guy. All of them played significant snaps.

It's a different world to be sure, but you have to have 3 qb's on the roster that can play. It's ok to be the guy holding the clipboard waiting your turn. It's a limited number that can leave a place as QB2 or QB3 and get a starting job with a lateral move. Most are going to a smaller school. Harrison Bailey is a good example. We were touting him as 'The Man' and he proceeded to play for 4 different schools in 6 years. He's started a total of 4 games in his career, 108 of 171 for 1190 yards and only 3 INT's. QB rating of 137.4. That's for a career. UT, UNLV, Louisville and now as QB 2 or QB3 at Florida. FWIW, 3 of his 4 career starts were at UT as a true freshman.........

This premise is: we have a coaching problem if G-Mac gives us the best chance to win.

Heupel has him consistently running against 2s and 3s, so Heupel doesn't know what he's doing if G-Mac is our best QB currently.

I don't think you actually believe your premise, do you?
Just going off of whats being shared around the interwebs. However, Im not 100% confident that CJH will start the better QB.

What would happen if G-Mac wins the job and balls out? This would be a real possibility for '26: JA is out of eligibility, Merk transfers, Faizon sees his path to the starting job set back 2 years and de-commits, leaving just one QB on the roster. Due to that possibility, I don't think you can make G-Mac the starter this fall.
If GMac was good enough to take the starting job this year and played well in 26 he'd be heading to the NFL which would put Brandon on track to start in 27 which would be 1 year and not 2.
If Brandon decommits I see 1 of 2 things happen(not counting dumping a big bag on him(
1 we suck so bad this year and other teams get in his ear
2 Nico rips it up at UCLA and put up crazy numbers, then it'll be coaches in his ear saying look at Nico, it was CJH offense that was the problem, not Nico, come here and you won't be held back from your potential

Heupel has the coaching pedigree for QBs and I think even if G-Mac looks good in practice, he's not going to start.

He's still running against the 2s and 3s, at least as we've heard from the practice snippets. If he starts throwing against the 1s in the press portion, I'll believe he's progressing. Until then, he's QB3.

I would not want to play a qb that is too skinny. Everytime I saw nico jogging on the field, it was terrifying. The only thing. That moved on his body was his helmet.

Literally a toothpick wearing a helmet

I wasn't impressed with his HS film, but I have to admit that when I sat in the stands and watched the QB's during the spring day, he was - in my opinion - far more comfortable than Merk and I also thought more accurate and poised. I won't be at all surprised if he's 1 or 2 at the end of camp.

I don't put much stock in his weight. Peyton wasn't that big either. In the pocket if he gets hurt he gets hurt but that's not going to mean anything while he's pulling the strings. What little he would be called on to run he's elusive enough to not take big hits.

It definitely won't be GMac and based off practice today JA is starting to separate himself from Merk. Not that we can rely on mods for our starter info, but sounded like Merk had a horrible day. It's gonna be JA, we just have to hope he doesn't suck or it's gonna be a long year, even with our fairly easy schedule.

Even with the negatives . What if at the end of fall camp , he gives us the best chance to win this season ?
If his name was George Macintyre Manning the whole Manning team would say no. The only reason rail thin Peyton got to play his True F year was because Starter Jerry Colquitt got hurt then back-up Todd Helton had a slight injury quit football for baseball. "Peyton looked big compared to Mac". Then Peyton& true freshman Brandon Stewart fought it out to be the game manager QB and a 8 & 4 season. No it will not happen unless a triplet of unfortunate events makes it plausible.

Exactly, all these people freaking out about his weight seem to forget that Ken Dorsey won a NC clocking in at about 6’4” 185lb. If he can learn the offense and consistently hum that tater better than the other two he will start I don’t care if he weighs 135, if he can’t he won’t simple as that.
As a college quarterback for the University of Miami, Ken Dorsey was listed at 6'4" and 220 lbs. A football statistics website states that his height and weight remained consistent throughout his college career.

I know, right? He's like Tyler Bray record-setting year thin!
Bray came in thin as a rail. We knew he had a strong are and had a gunslinger mentality. SlHe took his 1st snaps agaiinst USCjr and threw a Pick 6 the first play. Bounced back and almost won us the game. GMac has similar stature. Strong armed as well. It's really what's between the ears and how they process coverages to understand what the defense is attempting to do and wherre the ball needs to go.

Pocket passer in a pro style offense relying on no rpo qb keeps or extending drives with qb runs.
This offense is a V4 without a qb who can tuck it and go.

I’ve been watching several of the old games on YouTube lately. The games are luckily condensed. Anyway, I can’t remember which game it was but I think it was the ‘96 Florida game where he had something like five int’s. Now, could be three and we had two or three fumbles but, I remember turnovers killed us just like the ‘93 Bama game.
It was Peyton's Junior year and that would've been... 1996. Last time I ever bet on a college football game involving a team that I was invested in. I almost punched my future wife's little brother for rubbing it in.

Trending up? With who?
Every report coming out fall camp has him holding his own or out performing the other two in some instances . Two in particular that stood out to me , while practicing throwing on the move , reports had him out performing the other two , while practicing throwing the long ball , reports had him throwing the most aesthetically pleasing long ball of the three .

I think JA starts and plays well...his running ability and his seam accuracy are what is going to separate him...that TE seam tha we have open so often is money with JA
