If someone has the SC thread after the game last year, I'm pretty sure that Dobbs carrying us wasn't the theme...which, is one of the reasons that Butch is being scorched all off season and this season.
I look at Peterson and Fergusson before they transferred, and how they struggled when they got on the field early w/o PT. The biggest problem w/ Dormady development is that he wasn't able to get much PT last year, because we weren't able to put any teams away, w/ all the injuries, drama and inconsistent play. Now, he and JG are thrown into the fire, and to date, they look like they need alot more seasoning...though I think both have talent to be good QB's. Problem is, we need top shelf QB play now, and it doesn't look like it's coming.
I just wonder if Butch Jones, the way he develops talent, would still be here if not for having Josh Dobbs at QB?
With Dobbs departed to the NFL, Tennessee struggles to find any consistency at QB..... dejavu , Whorley, Peterman ect
Just goes to show how bad of a coach Butch Jones is.
Give a great coach like Jim Harbaugh a QB like Josh Dobbs and he wins 2 national titles.
Yep. Dobbs likely would have been invited to NYC for the Heisman ceremony if he went to Alabama or Ohio State. I think he was that good, but this coaching staff could not get it out of him.
The standard narrative on Dobbs is that he never truly developed as a passer. That's totally true. However, what isn't talked about as much is that I don't think he developed as a runner either. Most of Dobbs's big plays as a runner were improvised; the protection failed and Dobbs scrambled for yards, sometimes turning busted plays into spectacular ones. It was all natural, instinctive ability. But go back and pull the tape on his designed runs. He was quite mediocre at making the read on RPOs (never quite could read what the DE was doing) and had trouble finding holes on designed QB draws. He obviously was very naturally talented at running, but when a specific play designed to make use of his ability was called, he was inconsistent. I think that is 100% a by-product of mediocre coaching.
And got blowed out, not even blowed out but shut out in the playoff game.
