Worst Losses in history of UT football

I remember a lot of those. Ones not already mentioned, as far as I can teIl, are loosing to Vandy in '05 (that was another team that just quit). And 92 South Carolina game. We were good, they weren't. They had just joined the SEC and Johnny and the boys went to Columbia and laid an egg.

90 bama would be my #1 tear my gut out loss.

Classic "Johnny Ball". In 1990 we had beaten a very good Florida team 45-3 the week before and had handed Spurrier his worst loss ever and then the next week we lose to a 2-5 Bama team by a 9-6 score.

It was like when we played Bama, Majors would to into a time machine back to the 1950's and no matter how good our talent was, he would start that predicable run-the-ball-up-the-middle stuff and punt for field position.

Most years when UT-UK is close you can chalk it up to a combination of UT being lackluster and UK playing like it's their Super Bowl. But not this year; UK didn't do anything at all. Saturday's result was all on UT's offense being not "lackluster," not even "apathetic," but more like straight up quitters.

If UT didn't suck this year, then you would have a case for this being the worst.

Basically, a suck team had a bad game and lost to a very bad team, away on Senoir Day. Not a NC contender losing to a very bad team, away in the middle of the season. That is why '96 Memph game is #2.

edited to #2 because of the '92 Ark game

JMO, but - losing to Kentucky this year sucks. One of the worst losses ever ? - not close. We knew this team was pretty bad going in but got hyped with the OT win against Vandy.
The Tennessee Vols have broke my heart several times over the years, but the big wins and great teams make it worth it and that's why I won't quit coming back. We will get thru this because we are TENNESSEE.

But the actual worst loss was 1992 25-24 loss to a very very bad Ark team.

I think I heard my brain break like glass on the final FG.

I wanted Johnny fired that day, but he got to lose 2 more right after that before he is fired. UT was 9-3 that season.

Which homecoming game did we lose in the early 80s? I remember a cold night game with only about 10 people in the stands near the end. Was it one of the Mississippi teams?

Up-The-Middle-Johnny

I know it has become vogue to love Majors now and hate Fulmer...but Majors had to go.

Exactly right.

When Majors was "let go" it was time.

When Fulmer was let go, it was time as well.

If Dooley doesn't improve next year, it will be time too.

Let me Ad the South Carolina game from the same year, had we taken care of business in those game,we would've played in the very first SEC championship game!

2001 SECCG. LSU stole our mojo. Cost us a chance at a NC and started the long decline.

Kentucky this year obviously
Arkansas this year
Maryland in the Georgia Dome Bowl
Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl
Clemson in the Georgia Dome Bowl
LSU in the 2001 SEC Championship Game
Duke in 1981 or 1982
Nebraska twice in the Orange Bowl
Florida in 2006
Cal in 2007

These games all left me a feeling of rage toward the coaching staffs for not having the players mentally ready to compete. I also felt embarrassed when we represented the conference and program with substandard football (see all those bowl losses).

The "mail-it-in" disease seems to be particularly prevalent in Knoxville.

From the flops in bowl game category...

All the years run together...but somewhere in there, we got the hello beat out of us in two different bowl games by Penn State. I mean hammered! You wanted no part of Joe Pa in a bowl game back 10-15 years ago.

And then we played in the Cotton bowl (I think) one year on a bitterly cold cold cold day against Kansas State. And the lads phoned that one in. It was really cold.

Oh yeah, that Arkansas game from Johnny's last year was a real dud. Forgot about that one!

I think in terms of numbers. Against Kentucky last Saturday, we were only 7 point favorites. Heck, there are touchdown favorites that go down every single week. Disappointing but we will suvive.

In terms of point spread, that '96 game we lost at Memphis might be worst. I think we were like 22 point favorites or some such. It was in the 18-22 range somewhere. That was a big big upset!

The 90's have been call the, "Decade of Dominance," for the UT football program. In 2001, still benefiting from the glory days of the 90's, UT lost to LSU in the SEC Championship game 31-20. The loss kept UT from playing for the 2001 National Championship game. After the loss, the program has not been the same. I refer to the 2001-2011 as the, "Decade of Disappointment!" I would consider this loss, one of the worse loses for the UT program and for me. All I had to do was hit the "enter button" on my computer and the airplane, hotel and car rental tickets were mine. I was so disappointed. I really wanted to go to the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA.

UT just had to win 1 of those games to go to the SECCG in '92. We had already beaten UGA and UF head to head.

I kinda think we either lost or tied Army on Homecoming. Or perhaps one of those losses to Duke I think was homecoming.

Guess I need to do a little googling here

What is our record in the Georgia Dome? Seems like we haven't won one there in the last ten years....lol
