Worst Loss In Tennessee Football History... Is this it ?

1st BCS bowls were 1998

You're right. I think they were called Bowl Alliance bowls, or something like that, in 96. That was before the Rose Bowl joined, which was how Florida won the NC that year. If the Rose Bowl had been a part of it, the title game would have been Florida State vs Arizona St.

after thinking about it...no probably not. i mean its a **** loss, but its not like we were ranked or even had high hopes for this season.

I mean think about...we were dreaming on a 7-5 season coming into today. thats what we were aspiring for. that's how far we've fallen.

‘96 Memphis
35–3 ass stomping from Maryland in the Peach Bowl
‘08 Wyoming and UCLA
‘11 Kentucky

The Vols were a 26 point favorite today....

The worst loss was 2001 LSU because it started the slip into the abyss of misery. Our souls were removed that evening. LSU has lived our reality - intense games vs Florida and Bama, SEC championships, glory. We have steadily gotten worse and worse and worse and worse
...and worse and worse and ...

96 Memphis was worse.
08 Wyoming was worse.
11 Kentucky was worse.
Probably some worse ones from back before I started watching.

But it's definitely in the top 10.

96 Memphis maybe. 08 Wyoming we had just fired Fulmer, and Kentucky is an SEC team. You can't compare that to Ga St.

I wasn’t alive but I imagine people were ticked.
1940 USC game. The Vols were 10-0 during the 39 season and hadn’t allowed a single point. Then in the bowl game they didn’t score a point.

Surely not the worst loss, but probably felt like a huge kick in the nards.

In the modern era of football at UT, losing the home opener to a team that was 2-10, only had a football program for the last 10 years...yeah, this is the worst loss and it ain’t even close.

Kudos to the Ga. St. head coach, their game plan gave us fits and he coached his players relentlessly during the game and they bought in.

Hopefully Coach Pruitt learned a thing or two.

GBO!!!

96 Memphis is still a bad one. That was a terrible team and we were actually good, with expectations and stuff back then. Cost us at least a BCS bowl. Maybe a shot at the NC.
That was horrible but I still think this is the worst team to beat Tennessee and it really couldn't have come at a worse time. Everyone knew the Memphis game was a fluke. This? Maybe we are this bad.

Kentucky may be an SEC team, but that Georgia State team that beat us would've clobbered '11 Kentucky; that team was A-W-F-U-L. They were starting a WR as QB. They had no offense whatsoever. We came out and sleepwalked through that game.

At least this one was a bit of a 1st game fluke against team that played with fire and thought this was their Super Bowl. Our coaches didn't take this game seriously; they were already looking ahead to BYU and Florida. Big mistake.

Whereas, that Kentucky game was actually a meaningful one with a bowl game on the line. Our players looked like they didn't give a crap. We weren't getting out-strategized. We weren't underestimating our opponent. We just walked in and gave up. And that pretty much summarizes the Dooley years.

This IS EASILY the worst loss of program history. The 08 Wyoming game was after the season was canned and any game prior to it wasn't a death sentence for the program. This loss was the final nail in the coffin I'm afraid.

Georgia and Vanderbilt 17 were epic losses. But at least they are SEC teams. This is worse.

In terms of an outmatched opponent? I'm going to say no. I think the talent discrepancy between us and Memphis State in 1995 was far greater than the discrepancy between these two teams. On paper, this team is definitely more talented than GA State but the talent on our 95 team was ridiculous compared to Memphis.

The worst loss in my lifetime as a Vol fan, hands down. There are some high school teams in Georgia that would give Georgia State a run for their money, if not beat them. Not only did we loose to GSU, they were clearly the better team on Saturday. Inexcusable!

It is probably in the top 5. I have been watching UT/Listening to UT football since 1975 and i would these are my top 5 losses to bad teams: North Texas State 1975. Rutgers 1979. Memphis 1996. Wyoming 2008. Ga State 2019.

North Texas was 7-4 that year and coached by Hayden Fry.

Rutgers was 8-3 in 1979.

Both are likely better overall teams than Ga State.

Yea it’s pretty bad when a team can beat you without even having a quarterback.
