I did not Immediately respond to this post until my thoughts of last night‘s games or somewhat settled.
Several things are clear to me about this year’s team.
1. There is plenty of talent to be an Elite 8 team.
2. the leadership on this team-experienced players—was not good.
3. this team did bot have the heart to push through what were clearly chemistry issues.
4. this team was poorly coached.
5. there is no discipline on this team.
6, offensively, there was no real structure to the offense.
7. defensively, they were regularly a step behind or out of position.
8. the team clearly did not like the CKC system.
9 coaches insisted on a system that did not match the personal of this team.
what isn’t so clear is where to place the blame. I think a big part of it has to go to the coaches. The CKC system isn’t going to work without significant change to match the strengths and weaknesses of the players. Substituting just for the sake of substituting isn’t going to work. If the 5 on the court are parlaying well, there is absolutely no reason to send 4 different players in. That was clear last night.
But the players have to take some of the blame too. Too often, when things weren’t going well, the players checked out. Rather than show some heart and attack the adversity, they either lost interest or were so frustrated with the system, they quit trying,
My gut tells me that CKC will not be a success here, I think letting her go now is probably best for all. But with the young talent on the team, I reluctantly think she ought to be given one more year. But I hope DW has a short list ready to go.
Edit after watching the post game press conference. It’s time to cut ties. She is committed to a system and refuses to change. She said it was a mistake to go to Plan B which is a more normal and proven system and she says she learned she can’t do that again. I interpret her remarks to be that people can tell her the system won’t work and by golly she’s going to prove those doubters wrong. I think her stubbornness is going to have a several year negative impact on the LV. It’s time to Move on.
