Worst Coached Game Ever?

Exaggeration x 1000 on here. If it were the worst coached game ever we would've been blown out kind of like during the Dooley years. Dooley versus UK takes the cake over this game definitely. I thought the first half had some excellent calls to exploit UF and outside of the big run we gave up early on we had really good defensive calls and play.

The problem is this staff has no idea how to coach with a lead. They think they're still facing Big East teams that will fold down the stretch if you have a lead. The unfortunate fact is we likely had a better chance of winning if we were down a FG or TD going into the fourth than we did with a large lead because the staff goes stupid when they get a lead.

Tip......this week when the ball is snapped say 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000. You will never get to 5000 because Dobb's is either running for his life or he's on the ground. I rest my case. No good pass protection.

I must admit, this was hands down the worst offensive play calling i have ever seen with the stable of WR's we have. Why is Debord anti-throw, and how are we going to recruit WR's if they are watching us play. Who would want to play for a coach that blows every chance to prove he is a big time coach that deserves to be in the SEC? Thoughts?
At
The play calling agains Washington state at home I think in 1988 was really bad

If it was the worst offensively coached game ever, we would have never had a lead in the first place, I know some people refuse to admit it, but there were some great offensive coaching calls in the first half.

Does the passing game need to improve, YES.
Were there bone headed coaching decisions in the second half, YES. I guarantee both of these issues will be resolved in the next few games.

I think you and a lot of Vol fans are really blowing these two losses out of proportion. We are a couple plays from being 4-0, which is worlds of improvement over a few years ago which you people don't seem to remember. Dooley didn't blow 13 point leads against quality opponents, BECAUSE HE COULDN'T GET A 13 PT LEAD. The coaches will learn to hold these leads, but don't forget the players are at fault too. They have missed tackles, missed kicks, and dropped passes in both games that could have sealed victory.

You must not remember the SECCG against LSU when Fulmer and Co didn't make any adjustments when Rojan Davey went out and Mauck came in to look like a Heisman winner. Worst coaching job ever and cost Tennessee a possible NC

According to the geniuses on here, DeBord doesn't call downfield plays because Dobbs can't throw. That's weird, because he did alright last year.

I can say this, I have taken time to look at some of the Debord and Jones games from years past.
Both have been fine with passing in offensive schemes before. That would suggest something with this team is leading them away from the pass.

Now that is a factual statement. I'm just not sure if either of you were looking for a real response or just wanted to vent.
If the latter, my apologies and carry on. :hi:

Lol we were doing pretty well just running it.
Why is no one talking about the D costing us the game?

Worst coached game ever seems like a bit of a stretch. If the coaching was truly the worst ever they are never able to get the 13 point lead, nor do you come anywhere near 200 yards rushing on a good run defense. Also, on the one minute drill, the fumble cost a large amount of time...not saying I blame Dobbs here, but that ran off some more time and its not CBJs fault. Were there coaching mishaps, absolutely - the decision not to go for 2 and running the same play on 4th down and only rushing 3 makes no sense to me...but some people are definitely overreacting.

Derek dooley absolutely agrees its the worst coached game ever. Anything to make people forget how bad he sucked.

I'm going with the OL can't keep the defense from blasting the QB if he holds the ball for more than 2 seconds.

Then move the QB with some bootlegs or roll outs. Don't leave him standing there like a statue to be blasted. Dobbs also has to work through his progressions instead of thinking option 1 isn't open Run!

It's the worst coaching display I've ever seen for sure. And as far as debord...h a just doing what Butch wants him to do. At any moment Butch could say lets dial up a deep passing play because the have 18 men in the box. But he obviously doesn't

I always thought there were at least two Dooley coached games that can go down as the worst called games in modern Vol history..Butch had a good game plan against Florida, until of course the fourth quarter..

I can think of several games against UF we couldn't sniff 27 points on offense. Idiotic post resembles that of a reactionary teenage girl.

Tennessee is finally able to compete and actually win against top ranked teams. Butch will figure it out I'm sure. Another coaching change would be devastating to Vol football I'm afraid

Definitely not the worst coached game. I watched the Bears-Seahawks game and the Bears had 10 possessions and punted 10 times. Nothing even remotely creative! There are games in the 80s and 90s that would rank up there for some of the worst coached games (mainly coached by Majors).

Ironically, the only person Derek Dooley ever outcoached at UT was Butch Jones.

1988 was a very tough year..Does anyone remember what fans were saying that year about Coach Majors?? Were they wanting him gone?? I would imagine that fans had a little more patience back then than they do now. I was just to young to remember how the fan base actually felt about the first half of that disastrous season

No. Not even close. Butch played to win. Our offense executed and ran a 16 play like 8 minute or more drive to score a touchdown to go up by 13 with under 10 minutes to go. Ask the players in the secondary if it's any bodies fault but their own that they let the receiver get wide open, and then whose fault it was that they let 3 of them get blocked by one Florida player. Butch still got the team back down the field in a position to win the game. Yet a field goal 6 inches too far right from 55 yards away was the difference in the game.

Was there some coaching mistakes? Yes. Was it the worst coached game ever. Haha not even close. Did in-game coaching cost us the game. Not in my opinion.

Poor individual effort on 4th down (Florida was 5 for 5 including the game winning touchdown) was the difference.

Truth. Foreman took the worst angle out of those 3 db's on that play.

That loss at home to Wyoming in 2008 wasn't particularly great coaching

Don't forget the UCLA game earlier that same year..... They were horrible and got trounced 59-0 the next week by BYU...... And who can forget the Memphis State debacles .... Lost one with Peyton at the helm and needed a miracle long pass to win a close one at home with Tee

Mistakes are magnified in close games and in important games.

Butch has now had 5 games that IMO were lost due to his poor coaching decisions that I can identify. (All 3 Florida, 2013 Vandy, and OU this year)

I think the worst coached game I ever saw was Dooley at Mississippi State in 2012
