I know this is supposed to be a forum for all things college but I think this topic is worthy of at least mentioning. I want to wish the US World Cup team good luck and hope they shock some people.

Ok futbol fans. Let's hear it. The big game is near. What are our chances of making it out of our group?

Our chances are good. I'll even say we SHOULD advance. Whether or not we DO is yet to be determined. If we play like we did in the first half of that Turkey match, we'll finish dead last again.

What's the deal w Landon D? Is he hurt or what. I watched our last friendly and they were talking about it but I didnt catch it in time. Are the brits without Rooney? Or is he just gimpy. I have to get my butt in gear and do some research here before we start.

yup. But the last one was more of a play in game for the last few spots on the team, right?

I thought against Turkey the roster had been sealed but maybe not. The US played decent but not sort of great/smooth play which will take them deep into the Cup. US not typically a great tournament team like Brazil, Germany etc where they may play like crap but once they are in the dance, watch out.

My hope is that we play as well as we did in the South Africa made up world cup tourney promotion thing last year.

The second half performance gets us, at minimum, 6 points in the group stage, and very possibly 9 points. Turkey is not bad, and Guus Hiddink is an outstanding coach.

I think we're out in the first round of the knockout stage, but this team can make the semi-finals. I hate their chances against Brazil or a Spain team looking for revenge, but there's no one else who I'm absolutely terrified to play. I hear a lot of love for teams like Ivory Coast and certain other teams, and we're better than most of them. We're not going to intimidate anyone, but we've been competing with higher level teams for some time now.

Have we ever made it past the first knock out round (i guess quaterfinals)?

First knockout stage is round of 16. Quarterfinals is next. We made in to the quarterfinals in 2002, by beating our rivals to the south. (Absolutely great feeling, by the way)

Our best finish ever was 1930, when we finished third.

That's what i thought but 2002 was a wash for me as far as sports go.

For us to make a good run in the world cup we need a few things to happen.

1. We need someone to step up an be able to play Forward with Altidore. One of Findley, Buddle, Gomez, or Dempsey is going to have to be able to do it. My money is on Dempsey to start against England and do well up top.

2. We need to find a CM to play along with Bradley. Clark just is not going to get it done. I think we Start Edu for the England game and bring Torres in after halftime. Torres should start against Slovenia and Algeria.

3. We need to avoid the injury bug on Defense. I have faith that Bocanegra, Demerit, Gooch, and Cherundolo can get it done but they need to stay healthy.

4. Tim Howard is going to have to win us a game we probably shouldn't. Maybe England, maybe a bad team performance against Slovenia or Algeria but he'd gonna have to be big.

With that said I think we can do it.

This is what I think our lineup will look like against England

......Altidore......Dempsey
.Donovan...Bradley...Edu...Holden
Bocanegra...Demerit...Gooch...Dolo
................Howard

Do I smell a little German payback? I think so.

Yes he should. All depends on how whoever starts the England game does. I doubt Torres gets the nod cause Edu is a better defender then he is.

United States just got eliminated from the group stage. Altidore hospitalized with a sprained ankle.

It'll be ok...9 days til the first game, then another 5 or 6 for the 2nd. We'll be fine.

This sucks, but he's day-to-day (at least it's what I've heard) and could be back in time. We should make it out of the group, regardless.
