Indianapolis traffic northbound on 65 is going to backed up, especially with UT, UL, and UK fans all trying to get in to the game.

Last year a lot of UL fans never made it in to their game until the end because of traffic.

Leave in plenty of time, and be safe.

I would almost NEVER recommend going through Cincinnati to AVOID traffic, but if you are driving from Knoxville, it might be a good idea to keep on 75N when you get to Lexington and head north to Cincy, and take 74W to Indy.

This way isn't any longer or slower, and it will keep you from having to go through Louisville and getting bogged down in their fan traffic.

Disclaimer: If you get stuck in Cincy traffic, I'm not responsible. :) You were warned.

I live just north of Indy and take 74 every time I go to Knoxville, the loop around Cincy is never bad, just gotta watch for Ohio Hw patrol.

Is there really a traffic issue in those cities?

Cincy can be bad crossing the river, but mostly during rush hour, which I doubt will be a problem since the game is at 7 something. If you are in Cincy at rush hour, you'll be pushing to get to Indy by game time anyway with traffic.

You don't want to be crossing Louisville into Indiana around 3-5 PM. It's awful. They're currently working on a new bridge and such so traffic has been a b!tch. If you can ride up until you hit Lexington and then take a Cincy exit and go through there. I'd recommend it.

And anyways if you can leave early and get up to Indy hours before the game. Check out the city. It's really nice and it should be nice outside with the weather. The city will be lively.

If you go to Cincinnati and take the 275 west loop around to 74 and go to Indianapolis its only 3 miles further. And there is a butt load of construction taking place on 65 at the bridge in Louisville. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE CINCY ROUTE.

Exactly cwbytruckers! I lived in Indy for years and my parents live in Sevier County. I have driven every route between ET and Indy many times. The above is the best way to go by far. Never, ever go through Louisville, if it can be avoided. It is bad without construction and during construction, I would rather drill holes in my head over grinding it out for 20 to 25 miles on the I-65 or I-64.

Two other tips. Very few places to stop for gas or food between the Indiana/Ohio border and Indy, so gas up and eat by Florence, Ky or wait until Indy. If you miss the I-275 turnoff (west to Indiana/Ohio) from I-75, turnaround at the next exit and go back to I-275. The I-75 bridge in downtown Cincy is as bad as the Louisville bridges.

I take the loop by the airport to 74 and bypass Cindy all together.

Good point. I always forget about the 275 loop because I am never going that way towards Indy. I'm always heading into downtown Cincy. Probably people's best bet is to take the loop.
