A buddy of mine that was on the team at the time told me that after Ricky "rag arm" Clausen transferred to UT he told him that the LSU staff was laughing at Chavis over his failure to adjust to Mauk running the qb draw. After Davey got hurt Clausen became the #2 qb for LSU and had to put the headset on so he could hear the play calls and etc.. He said the OC was laughing and saying things like "I don't believe it...run it again".....

The worst part about 2001 was that we apparently lost a bet with Saban and had to take Rick Clausen.

December the 8th. When I hear those words I still to this day feel sick. I was there. The UT Alumni A. was selling Orange roses outside the Dome before the game confident TN would be in the Rose Bowl for the NC. Everybody was waving them around before the game. Given how great a team that was and what was riding on that game, most disappointing loss period.

Sounds like it was a good thing I didn't care about UT football back then. I've honestly only known failure since I became a fan so even stuff like Wyoming doesn't hurt much.

I vividly remember this game, and I was only eleven. I remember thinking, "their 1st string qb got hurt, so we're definitely going to pull it out." From then on I remember Matt Mauck running all of over us and UT blowing it. I've been going to UT games since I was seven or eight, but this was the first loss that I remember actually meaning something to me.

We were living in Virginia and my family went to a friend's house, both families were huge UT fans, and instead of us kids playing after the game we just sat there devasted. I'm pretty sure I started crying.

LSU QB injury worked against us big time. Matt Mauck was 19-2 at quarterback, plus he won one national title and he might have won a second if he was not injured. I doubt TN wins the first game if Mauck was in instead of Rohan Davey. TN just had no idea had good he was and didn't have time to prepare for a backup quarterback anyway before the Championship game.

I was at that game. It is painful for me as well. Losing sucked especially that game when we are so close to returning to the top and I have not gotten over it. I am not defending him but I don't hate him. Several things worked against us in that game including the LSU QB injury and key turnovers.

Don't listen to the Gang of Five acolytes, ENGRVOL.

For a long time I wanted to play Florida late in the year. However, playing them late in 2001 took a lot out of the tank for us the next week.

It's a painful loss for every Vol fan. No one would argues that.

You can't be serious. LSU won most of those 19 games despite Matt Mauck, not because of him. He wasn't particularly good, and he wasn't better than Rohan Davey.

The injury to Davey and the switch to Mauck did hurt us that night. We had prepared for Davey and, if you recall, we were up 17-7 when he went out. LSU changed what they were trying to do offensively when Mauck came in. And our defense looked like they didn't have a clue.

That's on John Chavis. He had to know about Mauck, who had played during injuries to Davey earlier in the season, and he knew Mauck might play. He should have had a contingency for that happening.

A lack of preparation and foresight by our defensive coordinator is what beat us that night, not Matt Mauck.

A quarterback doesn't have to be good to beat you if you're not prepared for him. Remember how Florida State became our opponent for the '99 Fiesta Bowl? It was because Florida's DC didn't have his team properly prepared to face Marcus Outzen.

Dan Brooks still calls the 2001 team the most talented team he was a part of....ouch....I still hate Fulmer for this.

You hate Fulmer for bringing all the talent in for that team? Just kidding, I know what you mean?

Although it wasn't much better, Mauck seemed to have more success in the NFL than Davey which would lead one to believe Mauck was better than Davey.

That game was such hearbreak! I actually cried. What a wasted opportunity. Chances are, we wouldn't have beaten Florida that year at the beginning of the season. We needed time to get mentally ready for them, so when we won that game, it was such a gift, but the players got too cocky and dropped the ball on the one obstacle between them and the national title game.

It was crazy because there were substantially more UT fans in the house, but that LSU section was just thunderous. You've gotta give it to them: those guys can make some serious noise, and do so regardless of whether they're up or down.
