Woodson still >>>> Manning

Only went by the hyped NC game of that season and the fact, you never know who a person will vote for. In another thread I posted there were quite a few polls back in the old days, several teams ended up NCs in one or another - It was all mythical, but it is what it is.

The old days yes, but 1997 wasn't "the old days". It was the Coaches and AP, and by then you didn't have the crazy results you got in the 50s when 10 teams could claim an NC. It wasn't as good as the BCS but it was far less mythical than it was 20-30 years previously.

But for the most part I think pre-BCS major college football was pretty stupid as far as its champion. For the life of me I can't understand how it was the way it was. In fact I don't even understand why they bothered declaring any kind of champion.

I graduated from UT in 2008 and I bleed Orange.

But Woodson was the best college football player in the country that year. Whether DB, Punt Returner, or WR. And he single handedly won Michigan the NC.

The vote wasn't even really that close and there hasn't been a better two way player since Woodson.

Assuming you graduated 4 years after high school that would have made you what... 10 years old in '97?

And we are supposed to trust the judgement of an 11-12 year old on who the best player in the country was?

How could it be worse than a lot of the opinions on the main board?

Seriously though, I did better at pick 'em tourneys as a 12 year old than I do today, I know that

Agreed, but you won't find many who share that opinion here.

Probably because Champ Bailey was better the very next year.

I still find it interesting he's the only defensive player to win the award.

Are you trying to suggest Nebraska was better than Michigan? I certainly hope not. Btw, the bowl alliance didn't mean anything. Ap voters and coaches were free to vote for anyone.

Nebraska would have destroyed Michigan. Tennessee was better than Michigan at almost every position as well. Tennessee needed Michigan to lose for any chance at the title. Michigan would have been the consensus champ had UT won.

Was referring to Woodson being the best that year.

Bailey, was no doubt the best 2 way player ever in the game.

What are you talking about? Tennessee might have had two or three guys who could've started for Michigan on defense that year. Only advantages Tennessee had over Michigan were at QB and WR.
