WNBA discussion thread?

The W is trying to get player exclusivity in exchange for higher pay as part of the deal. No Unrivaled, no Eurocup. So Unrivaled and the W would be competing for players.

It is quite disruptive with players coming and going throughout the season and some, like Jordan Horston, get injured playing elsewhere. The Sparks would have made the playoffs if Julie Alemande had't spent the first part of the season in Europe. Of course the league will have to pay them enough to make playing elsewhere unnecessary.
Should have zero impact if in different seasonal windows. It would also leave the players zero leverage. It would probably need to be on the table, but at a huge price. Sounds almost like the LIV negotiations with which the players and PGA ultimately settled.

Usually backfires.
Agreed if the W comes up with a clause of if you play in Unrivaled you can't play in the WNBA then how successful you think Unrivaled will be as far as longevity versus the WNBA/NBA 2 headed monster ? . Yeah okay lets give them 1 million dollar salaries but you cant play in both leagues. Sorry Collier Sincerly Cathy LOL

That’s where it’s headed.

Notice there was ZERO advertising for unrivaled during the wnba season. Have already heard of some coaches asking for contract clauses forbidding it due to injury risk as well.

Eurobasket doesn’t appeal to the same market so it was never a threat. The W isn’t going to be interested in sharing the limited market for women’s basketball with another professional league in the US.

Thus the reason Collier saying these outlandish comments today versus being married to the owner of that said 2nd professional league while in the CBA negotiating meetings using unrivaled as leverage as if to say we can all play here if you dont pay , but NOT all of them can play there only the top 48 or w/e the remaining 100 go jobless because the top tier want to make a stance and cash out smh .

Young players, especially those still on a rookie contract, made as much money playing Unrivaled last year as they did in the W. And absolutely loved the experience and the facilities, which were crafted precisely to fill every need the W had neglected.

So yes Unrivaled is already viewed as a rival league. Which is why it's a clear conflict of interest for Phee.

1 venue versus 13 going on 15 its not that hard lol . Let's see Unrivaled expand to 8 cities instead of 8 teams with 1 city then lets talk about sustainability . 3 on 3 vs 5 on 5 just does not hit the same . The viewership was not that great to use as if the league will last 10 more years like year 1 was . The investors Bazzel gets are amazing but if they move from 1 venue to multiples around the country and per team i think the true #'s will differ.

Yes. And while they are a rival, they cannot offer the same things.

Only 36 players participated in Unrivaled. There are 156 players in the WNBA. Seeing a lot of people on twitter say they should all just make Unrivaled 5x5 and ditch the W. If they try to cut their nose to spite their face here a few dozen will be making millions and 100+ will be making $0 playing basketball.

There is no way Unrivaled could support a 4 fold increase in players and maintain the salary promises they made lol.

As I've said endlessly, things are made so much harder for the poor refs because so much contact is allowed. They're constantly called upon to make hard judgment decisions on how much is too much.
The crux. Just reset the bar on contact. Warn the coaches, players and officials. Who determines the level of contact “allowed”?

I would think the W Competition Committee does. They HAVE to do this.

I’m curious how contractually bound the NBA is to the W. Because I can totally see them throwing support behind a rival 5x5 league run by Alex Bazzell.

The genius thing UR did was position themselves as a players league, where the W is more an owners and management league. UR gave the first set of players financial stake in the league.

Well, that's not going to happen. If such a clause is put in by the league the players wouldn't vote for it. I don't think Phees involvement in Unrivaled should have any effect on the negotiations, except showing the league that there is a way that the players can get paid more for their efforts. The league was formed to keep the good players here on home soil as opposed to playing overseas which has become pretty dangerous these days. It's also a 3x3 league, playing in the winter, so it doesn't compete with the WNBA game or season. Phees husband has done an incredible job running the league, and just starting up this league by Phee and Stewie from nothing is an incredible accomplishment. This league should not affect the CBA negotiations except showing the league that it could be successful, paying the players more and adding a few comforts that the Unrivaled has provided for its players. At the very least, Unrivaled has shown what can be accomplished if the owners are not greedy, so having that as an example should force the league to invest more in its players. If the league is going to survive, the players have to be happy, that's all.

I made a mistake in my earlier post where I said I ‘can’t’ see the NBA switching to support an Alex Bazzell 5x5 league when I meant I totally ‘can’ see that. He’s an NBA fave and definitely seen by the W as a threat. I fixed that post now.

Back on the court, I sure didn’t have Aces vs Mercury on my finals bingo card. Hate having to pull for the Aces but it’s the lesser of two evils for me.
