WNBA discussion thread?

šŸ˜‚ I thought maybe I was being silly for thinking that, but you get it, too. Not a fan of that. Also highly disappointed in the player Teira McGowan has turned out to be. She should be dominating, but she isn't. And I think Griner has only been a good, but never truly a great (IMO) pro player and I really thought she had a chance of becoming the W's Wilt Chamberlain with the wingspan she has -- and the sickening way she dominated Tennessee as a collegiate player. That girl ate our freakin' lunch, every time, and then had the audaciity to just be a slightly above average post in the W?! It ticks me off, honestly.
There's a clip of JJ sitting on the court kicking her feet like a toddler in a tantrum but I couldn't find it tonight. Also that clip shows Stewie and Sabrina literally pushing JJ off the court and onto the bench after that little display I don't think that was a healthy locker room this year at all. That may have had a lot to do with Sandy's firing.

You're right, Mcgowan has also been a petulant toddler and never really played up to her potential B.G. is really becoming an afterthought in Atlanta, mainly because Bree Jones has played so well. I would not be surprised to see B.G. retire very soon. The game gotten a little faster than she's willing to keep up with.

The JJ tantrum thing does not surprise me at all. Ugh. *smh*

I agree about BG likely retiring soon. In these last couple of seasons I've cut her all the slack I ever had available because 1. She's a past-her-prime-aged player, and 2. The ordeal she endured in a Russian work camp, not knowing the entire time whether she'd ever get home again, was so horrific that I have viewed this time since she has been back as Grace Time. I expect little to nothing from her at this point, and I actually regularly praise the Dream org for giving her this opportunity to fade out at her own pace. That was a kind thing for Atlanta to do, and I am happy they did it.

All that said, my statements earlier about being disappointed she didn't become the female Wilt that I'd predicted she would, ONLY took into consideration all the seasons BEFORE her traumatic experiences in a freezing-cold Russian hard-labor camp. Jeez... anyone who'd hoped she would lead the Dream to a championship had to have been more that just a little naive about the physical, emotional and psychological toll an ordeal like that would have on a person. I viewed it as a minor miracle she was able to suit up for the Dream at all, and I applaud her for giving it a shot. 🄹

Phoenix is one of my least favorite teams and Thomas is by far one of my least favorite players. Her brand of bully ball is making the league unwatchable and unrefable. Oth, the Lynx are one of my favorite teams and Phee one of m favorite players. That said, I agree with the post below. I don't think this was a foul; in fact, if anything Phee stuck her leg out to try to inhibit Thomas's progress. Hate that she got injured, and she did get battered all night. But not on this one

Cheryl Reeve Came all the way unglued and all the way onto the floor. Also went off in the post game press conference. Predictably she's not just fined but suspended for the next game.

When I first read about Reeves going off, I thought that Thomas had added Collins to her notorious list of cheap shots to take out star players, ala CP3. But this one did look more like a legit basketball and Phee just got caught in a bad position.

In my unpopular opinion, much of the W's reffing problem is not on the refs. As I've often said, players are now so big, strong and fast that its difficult for refs to keep up. Add all the allowed contact and refs have very little chance.

They simply have to dial back, way back, the beloved 'physicality', which obviously has gotten far out of hand. It's based on the twisted notion that beating each other up makes the W somehow as interesting as the men. Ditto the exaggerated trash talking. It doesn't help the game at all, only keeps them injured and angry. It actually caters to the creepy folks who are only there for a good catfight. They should stay in WWE.

The solution is to crackdown hard on almost all contact. Make contact a foul again. Enforce the 3 sec lane. Also crack down hard on all the flopping and fake falling that goes on. Almost universally, players who drive to the basket launch themselves out of bounds and to the floor at the end of the drive, pimping for a foul. It's hard enough for the refs without players actively trying to fool them.

Ant tee up players who keep protesting every foul ad nauseum. Perhaps a brief time to disagree and the move on or coach can request replay.

Surprised anyone is even watching. League is a joke. Had a chance and have played themselves right back into obscurity. Interest and viewership has tanked at what should be the highlight of the season.

It’s definitely the officials. Most poorly officiated sport I’ve ever seen. The drastic increase in injuries to major players this season is a direct result of poor officiating.

While I agree that the refs, injuries and even the over-scheduling issues detract from the WNBA, I still enjoy it. Not surprisingly, you tend to have a narrative devoid of the facts when you hate something or someone. The WNBA Playoffs are up 2% this year over the record last year with Clark, and up 165% from two years ago. Arenas are jammed packed and loud. Far from the notion that interest and viewership have tanked.

Manufactured numbers. Nobody is watching. League is tanking at an alarming rate. One year ago everywhere you went games were being played in bars, people were talking about it at Walmart, at the doctor, wearing jerseys.

That’s all stopped. Full stop.

It actually caters to the creepy folks who are only there for a good catfight.
The ones attending games, the ones that continue to buy WNBA gear, the ones engaged in the associated social media, the leadership of the WNBA or just the roller derby fans?

You are lacking transparency in this matter.
