Recruiting is all about relationships and Mahoney was the primary recruiter on Smith correct? He is also position coach correct? I do not think you land a kid like this and change his position coach, maybe shuffle around but not can all together.

He has an expiring contract so he could still very well be gone by February. Trey committed to the players and the university and the culture we have, not to Mahoney.

The two are not related. The fact that Smith is an early enrollee makes it even less relevant.

If I'm not mistaken, Mahoney did not go with the other coaches to see Trey before he committed. I think that tells you all you need to know.

But I find it weird that Martinez has been so involved on the recruiting trail.

False. Mahoney and DeBord were the coaches that did Trey's in-home visit Monday night.

Every coach on staff is all-in on the recruiting trail, even the ones that are looking for other spots. It's the way the business works.

As weird as it may sound, a coach at a new school wouldn't hire someone that was slacking in the recruiting trail for his old school, even if he knew he was likely to move on. Coaching is the craziest business I've ever seen when it comes to dedication to a job you know you're leaving.

When Jay Graham left, his family had already packed up his house before signing day and he still was directly responsible for major signees by going after them down the stretch.

Do tell... who is looking for other spots?

Mahoney should of been fired 3 yrs ago. If Butch keeps his friends then they all will be fired next yr. Butch probably thinks there is no problem.

Oh really? Because Ja'Wuan James and Zach Fulton have both publicly credited Mahoney with their success in the NFL. So you're saying Mahoney should have been fired after the year he coached them and James was a first-round NFL draft pick?

Look, the line play has been sub-par the last two seasons, though injuries played a big role both years. I get sending Mahoney off after this year. But to say he's a bad coach or that he should have been fired after a season where he helped a guy become a first-round pick is just not accurate.

I don't think this affects Mahoney one way or the other. Smith said the main reason he came to UT was because of the players making him feel like he was already part of the team. Actually made zero comments about how the coaches or coaching affected his decision. Just going by what he said yesterday on ESPNU.

He spoke at length about the players involved in his recruiting process, how they were solid mates. Just an opinion, but I think that is what sealed the deal.

Some quotes attributed to Smith - very positive young man. He will be a good ambassador for UT Football.

"I'd say it's the players to a certain extent," Smith said. "A lot of guys, especially in that O-line room, we just have a great relationship. The things Coach Jones has in place to be successful not only in football but also in life after football, they're excellent."

"We'll make Tennessee elite again."

"The things Coach (Butch) Jones has in place to be successful, not only in football but in regards to life after football, they're excellent. Picking on being an in-state guy, the abilities after football, what I can do for myself and my family, you really can't turn them down.

"A big thing Coach Jones pushed was building your brand," Smith said. "He really made that pretty integral in my recruitment, what Tennessee can do for my brand. I think the opportunities at Tennessee are really unlike most schools.

"The things they have in place, like a TV studio in the bottom and a media room for the SEC, these are large integral steps to be an elite program. I really feel like they can do it. We are going to do it, excuse me. We'll make Tennessee elite again."

So he did all that in 1 year for those 2 but since then what has he developed ? By the way those 2 were NFL bound before Mahoney got here.

If anything I think it's quite the opposite. A thanks for the 4 years but we can take it from here. Get someone who can actually use the talent. Side note, anyone else realize how babyface the a OLine looks. Danny O'BRIEN, Corey Vereen, & Derek Barnett look like grown ass men with beards and body mass compared to Weisman, Jashon Robertson and even Kyberyson when he was a 5th year.

So Trey Smith mentions being life champions? Hmmm.

I know it sounds corny to us, but, probably not to the parents of players and recruits.

Exactly - most parents and players who have their head on straight know that a very small percentage make the NFL and many of those that do are not there long enough to set them up for life.

They also realize that there is off the field challenges adults must be prepared to face regardless of how well they do on the field.

I realize that the timing of when Jones made his comment was bad - but the intent and message he was trying to communicate to the intended audience was good.

It really wasn't that he said it. It was when and in what context that he said it. Completely tone deaf.

Regradless of the context, it got blown out of proportion by the media and many on VN. And the freak out over it was beyond dumb. People took an innocent comment and spun it to idiotic levels.
