With all the good why?

With all the good things that's happened and happening for the UT football program. Why is there so much negativity by our own fans on this (and other) site? Honest question.

Somewhat depends on what you mean by negative.

To some, honest criticism of anything is "negative".

To me.... setting low expectations regardless of how you dress it up in "rah, rah, rah" or how many "Go Vols" you put after it.... is negative.

I was wondering if this was the intent of the op.
No profound answer, some people just have really negative personalities.
For all the times "JUST win" will be posted, it will take less than an hour after winning for a "we didn't win by enough" thread.
I always want to see improvement but I also just enjoy football.
How some make it a passion while being miserable for the whole process is beyond me. But I have given up concerning myself with such. People gonna people.

I can see that. It was just a curiosity, nothing more. It does look as if some can't enjoy how good things have gotten because they're so hell bent on showing the bad.

Winning is the answer!

Two or 3 years ago, I said that if Jones didn't prove he could win that it would hurt recruiting. I was called "negative" and mocked for saying kids would progressively want wins rather than promises of wins.

Although losing close games has been a bummer, I have to say that I've somewhat enjoyed the process of a rebuild. Seeing UT struggle so mightily under Dooley was something I never thought I would see since I became a fan in 1985. It has been a bit more rewarding to know I've stuck with the Vols when I've seen so many jump off around me. I said earlier that this is the first season I've been excited about in a while. I should have said that better. This is the first one I've been truly optimistic about in a while. I'm always excited for UT football.

Actually I'm not one at all. I was critical of Jones at times, but he has mostly won me over. I'm excited about this season. First time I have been in quite a while.

My question to you that you so clumsily avoided, was why start a thread asking why there is SO much negativity when in the same thread you say there are only a few jaded fans that don't agree with you?

I didn't mean so much as in a huge number of people as much as so much from the 30% (my guess) of the truly miserable who cannot seem to be able to see the tremendous progress the program has experienced.

I'm with ya.
The rebuild process has been interesting. I was alive for the last one but had that younger mentality.

I still have to stop for a moment and remember we're discussing winning the SEC, not just trying to get to a lower tier bowl. It's been awhile my friend.

I really think the number is lower than that. I hope so anyways. You would have to be blind to not see the huge steps that have been taken. Not only from a talent standpoint, but I also think from a character standpoint. I really like these kids Jones has brought in. They have really represented the school well. I hope they can have a huge year on the field. They deserve it.

Maybe the # is lower. I think as the wins roll in the # will fall significantly.

LOL I agree and just told a buddy of mine at lunch pretty much the same thing. It is fun to watch for sure.

We have improved win every year he's been at UT!

Recruiting has not improved every year. His first two full classes were both good. The '16 class was a step back. The '17 class is in trouble unless something changes pretty significantly. According to 247, Clemson has commits from 3 of the top 10 players in TN.... UT has one.

IF you think people here are negative.... Try to imagine what Clemson coaches are saying to recruits. "Jones can't win the close ones".... "Jones costs his teams wins by being too conservative".... "Jones has lost at least one game to an inferior opponent each year and doesn't beat superior opponents"

You may not like it.... but it works.

We signed a smaller class last year.
And it's only July. Less than half of a year through the recruiting year. 7 months left.

Are we really being negative? Or does D4H consider us negative because we disagree with his thinking, and you are buying into his opinion?

More honest questions.

Coaches are fair game when it comes to criticism. As long as a player is giving their all, I'm fine with them. If we can't look back at coaching decisions and player execution how will we know were improvement is needed.

It's negative to predict future failures. It may be accurate but still negative.

Some have used the terminology "toss up" about 4 of our scheduled games, I would add the SECCG, the playoff game and the NC game as "toss ups".

Who really knows how a competative game will end? Too many variables.

For me it's more fun thinking how we will run the table, than to think, some how some way we will mess up or get jinxed our of a win.

Go Vols!

If you're not one of the negative posters then this thread wasn't for you.

And nothing like what D4H does with his idiotic posts.
This was more about the entire program showing impressive progress on and off the field.

Star avg by year:

13- 3.18
14- 3.65
15- 3.69
16- 3.52
Current- 3.06

Recruits want to play for winners. Jones is a very good salesman for the program but promises of wins and championships only last so long.

247's composite ranking of TN HSFB players shows nine 4*. Four are committed. Clemson has the commit of numbers 1,5, and 7. UT has #4. They don't appear to be in play for 2 of the remaining 5.

All through last year's recruiting cycle.... guys were saying, "Just wait until next year when UT has a great class based on in-state talent."

I know you don't like to face unpleasant truths. But the '17 class isn't where most expected it to be.... not even close.

There is time. But it appears that the notion of building a great class on instate talent.... is gone.

Readervol doesn't like to face unpleasant things. You are being negative if you ever point out negative things.... and particularly if they're critical of Jones.

Readervol is to Jones as D4H is to Dobbs.

Team 120 is loaded and if they can get a lucky break or two, they could win it all! Every champion dodges a bullet (98 VOLS) it seems, so being skeptical makes sense considering our schedule. But impossible, it is not! Just beat the gators and elephants and I will be happy!

GO VOLS,!!!

Iam4utalways is to Hurd.

(Then criticize all that is UT, except Hurd).

(Then pile on the compliments, but just on Hurd)

Nah, I'll just say Hurd is a grown man among yougmen. He could win the Heisman, if things fall into place. Set a few record while on a NC run, that's how it's done.

It does seem one constant to some folks is the notion that waiting always means things will get better. Wait a while before you expect wins. If recruiting is falling off, just wait. Hopefully it gets better. Next year, next year. IMO if other schools aren't content on waiting like some UT fans are, we're just falling behind. AU isn't expected to play for an SEC title like UT is. A&M isn't either. They seem to be landing those coveted 4* type guys who people are so sure are "waiting" to see what TN does this year. Some want to wait. Not me. It all sounds like excuses to me. Our staff is struggling on the recruiting trail. It's very obvious.

Going by the most comprehensive - 247 Composite:

2013 - 24th, Ave. 84.57
2014 - 7th, Ave. 89.51
2015 - 4th, Ave. 89.43
2016 - 14th, Ave. 89.60

I don't agree with last year's class being a step back at all! And not even looking at star power, this staff has proven they can evaluate and coach up IMO.

I'll agree that this year is going slower than expected by some. But Jones tends to close strong. I expect this year to be more of the same with winning big.
