UT doesn't have the personnel for a 3-4 but I wonder if the new DC will try to switch to that scheme anyways by starting 2 Defensive Tackles and a DE in a 3-4. Thoughts?

Depends on how good McCullers and Sentimore are. If they're legit you could use McCullers at NT and Sentimore at DE. This is probably a year away (2013) though.

CDD has mentioned a few times that they'll be running multiple defenses. I agree with you, UT does not have the personnel or depth to go 3-4 as their base, but, I'm sure we'll see it and its variations quite a bit.

I thought I read somewhere where Tennessee DOES have the personnel for a 3-4?

Anyway, Tennessee will be multiple w/ the defense. The DC will adjust to the strenghts of his personnel. As, WKyVol said, it will depend on these JUCO guys. We should see a lot of different formations. Very unpredictable and will be tough to gameplan against.

I think we have the personnel for a 3 4 right now... I also think we will be using both the 3 4 and the 4 3... Exciting times... But can you just imagine the linebackers in two years with santos and Aj in the middle and maggitt and Otha peters on the outside... It's gonna be awesome

As long as we have more points than the other team when the clock ticks 00:00 then I don't care what defense we are running.

SEC is dominating the Miss America pageant too with Miss LA,SC,FL, AL and TN, in the top 13, is there anything we don't dominate at lol. Way off topic I know but I can't start a thread, and I thought it was funny.

Bama defense looked pretty good the other night. Wouldn't mind to see a little of that back in Knoxville. GBO!

Dooley said there would be plays that had 4 LBs on the field, there will be plays with 3 LBs on the field, some plays with 2 LBs on the field, & some plays with only 1 LB on the field. Sounds multiple to me.

Tennesse has enough personnel to atleast implement it, & use it part time so the transition to it in another year will not be as drastic. I think 3-4 will be our base defense in 2013.

I wish Dooley explained this better. Us regular normal folks can probably figure out what a 3-4 is or a 4-3—or even Cover 2—but you throw out “Very Multiple” and we’re just gonna stare at him like HH does...all the time. They used that concept when Saban went to the Dolphins, and all it means is they’re gonna use a lot of schemes to attack the defense.

The biggest bugaboo the defense had when Dooley and company showed up was 1. the empty cupboard in the DBs and 2. the lack of quality of DL. The reason the defenses were able to run all over Tennessee last year was because of the lack of quality depth at DT, mainly. Now with some players down in the box and better athletes in the defensive backfield, they can do more of the scheme-switching Dooley talked about when he was first hired in 2010.

Until McCullers came on board, running the 3-4 wouldn’t be something they could do a lot (and really effectively). Sentimore gives them a bone-fide pass-rushing 5-tech DE, and Couch can slide out there on the strong side. Not sure who the 4 linebackers will be. But I know there’s enough of the type of DT-types in there to really run 3-4 more often.

And just to be clear, this isn’t new. They’ve been running some 3-4 looks with 3-man lines since Dooley showed up. Maggit put his hand on the ground a few times last year. And I’ve seen Smith and Bohannon playing sorta Jack-like where they switched sides and stood up. They just have better personnel now.

The main problem is...How smart are our D players and how fast can they learn new D schemes.

Our D got much better last season and went from 56th ranked to 28th ranked D in the Nation because the kids were in the 2nd year of learning what Wilcox was trying to install for our D.

We'll have the same growth and learning process to go through with the CSS systems he's going to install.

I hate Nick saTan but I give credit where it's earned and he IS the master of the D at the college level and both CDD and CSS have spent several years learning from Nick saTan and are smart guys so you can bet that CDD has been wanting the right guy as our DC since the minute he agreed to take over the total disaster our Vols program had become.

Now he has the right guy with CSS and over the next 2 or 3 years it's going to be fun to watch our D get better and better and watch us get the right recruits to fit the systems that CDD and CSS want to run.

The faster our kids can learn the more different things you're going to see our D throw at the other teams O and we'll keep them confused alot more than we've ever done in the past.

Trolls and NegaVols may as well keep quiet because AD Hart just guaranteed CDD will get 3 more years on the hill with these 3 great coaching/recruiting hires.

VFL...GBO!!!

don't know much but we'll pob run some dime and nickle.1 and 2 dep coverage, man, zone and some 5dl and hopefully more blitz packages.when you think multiple defenses it could mean alot of different things.i hope we're multiple because it will keep offences guessing.hopefully its an attacking defence.

right...look at San Fran last night; they were in 3-4 and 4-3 and 4-2-5 sets last night...that is what Dooley wants.

Good post, explains the situation very well.
