With 20/20 hindsight, who would have been better than Butch?

James Franklin or Gary Patterson.

Too bad UTs AD pissed off Patterson by passing him up when he was interested.

We didn't pass him up, He stood us up at the interview. He scheduled an interview with us then he didn't show up. Patterson isn't leaving TCU at his age. Why would he? He has the #4 team in the country right now!

The emphasis was on getting a good recruiter because of the pile Dooley left and Bama was pulling in #1 recruiting classes. Charlie Strong left us at the alter. Butch was Hart's 2nd choice.

With perfect 20/20 hindsight, who would have been a better choice post Dooley?

If we had allowed Kippy Brown to coach in 2011, then our coaching search after the season would consist of:

Rich Rodriguez, Hugh Freeze, Urban Crier, Kevin Sumlin, Larry fedora, todd graham, Jim Mora, Justin fuenta, Gus Mal., NOrm Chow, bob Davie, Bill O'Brien, or Charlie Weis..

Those are the coaches who were hired after the 2011 season ended.......

So, after the 2011 season, we replace Kippy Brown with who??????????????????? Jim Mora??

Gruden, Patterson, Gundy and Strong that I remember hearing of. Could have been others contacted as well or I could have forgotten someone

My memory is hazy, but it seemed like:
- Gruden was in play, but wanted to much $$, and complete control, which Hart would not give up.
- Gundy was a non-starter, he played at OSU, didn't want to leave a good situation there.
- Patterson got pissed off at Hamilton during the Kiffin hiring, and would not talk to Hart/Tenn again.
- Strong was #1 choice and Hart flew up there with a contract in hand over a weekend, and Strong turned him down.

At this point, Hart pushed the panic button on the way back to Knoxville, and diverted the plane to Cinci and interviewed Butch, who desperately wanted the job, and let it be known.... then Hart gave him a contract that week.

So, I don't know of any other options ranked above Butch, obviously if there were, they would have been hired before Butch. But it looks like no one else wanted the job and Butch was the only real choice after Strong.

I wanted Charlie Strong. TBH I still think he's a good coach. Texas wasn't a good fit. To much behind the scenes from big time donors. Once that ship sailed, I was surprised UT didn't push for Kyle Whittingham before Butch. I think he would have done a better job coaching.

Strong was my first choice as well.

Honestly, we would have been better off to give Chaney and Pittman modest raises and brought in some proven Assistant Coaches, with Wilcox in charge of Defense if we could get him back.

I wanted Larry Fedora, and we all know how that has worked out at North Carolina.

Huge dose of honesty. A lot of people wanted Fedora if I remember correctly. He is one of those coaches that makes you see how success does not always follow a coach. He has turned out to be worse than Butch which is damn hard feat to accomplish.

Exactly... They went panic mode when Troy Calhoun said no and Hamilton started texting Derek Dooley.

Could you imagine the look on his face when he realized that Tennessee was texting him about becoming the head coach? He was probably more shocked and confused than we were.

It would probably be easier to list who would have been worse to be honest with you:/.

But to be fair he did get us stable. That's why I think he would deff be a good hire for a school like ole miss right now. He could get them a few wins but also keep them out of trouble. Once the NCAA investigations and punishment is done with then they could move on.

I remember Dools talking about that in his Presser. Was shocked we hired the Football Coach/Athletic Director of Louisiana Tech after spurring Cutcliffe away.

With 20:20 hindsight, Willie Taggart would have been a better choice than CBJ. He moved from WKU to USF the same year CBJ came to Tennessee. Has shown to be an excellent recruiter and builder without the slogans/talk nonsense. He is very low key.

I think most people severely underestimate how hard and rare it is to make a homerun hire. If it was easy teams like Florida, Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame, Miami, Tennessee, USC. Would never have 5-10 year stretches where they've been abysmal to average like so many have been recently. Look at bama before saban, Michigan since Carr, Miami from Coker to Richt, Texas since Brown etc. It's one of the absolute hardest things to evaluate and nail and half of it is luck.
