For those who aren't very familiar with the triple option offense, there's a chance to get a primer before Monday's game: Army plays Fordham in a few minutes (6pm Eastern) on CBS-SN.

Army's not the equal of Ga Tech, for sure, but the offenses will look extremely similar to us outsiders who don't watch the wishbone every week.

Go Army! :)

I'm not going to get in the middle of that inter-service rivalry, but I will throw a relevant wishbone-oriented trivia question out for your consideration. Which service academy holds the college football record for longest single offensive possession in a game? And where and when was it established? The possession in question was the epitome of Woody Hayes' three yards and a cloud of dust: 94 yards in length, 26 plays, and consumed 14:42, but ironically resulted only in a field goal.

Oh, you're a jarhead. :good!:

Did you go to Annapolis?

Lol, no i wish. Wasn't exactlya quality candidate coming out of high school. Found a little success on the enlisted side. But i developed an admiration of the USNA during my time in.

Whats cool, attending the academy is alk mt son has talked about since about 5 or 6. Hopefully i can keep his interest in it up for the next few years.

Pretty sure I remember it being Navy in some bowl game a few years ago.

Holy hell, Rex, that's a cool trivia question. Lasted an entire quarter!

I've no idea, can't wait to hear who.

Nice, best of luck with him, hope he goes. It's a great school.

But he'll still be a squid. :)

Yeah, thanks Will, you're absolutely right. I'm very lazy and imprecise with my terminology, frequently using "wishbone" and "triple option" as synonyms although they really aren't.

Army does run the flexbone, most of the time. IDK if Ga Tech is a true wishbone team, or also flexbone.

My only defense is that Army did truly run the wishbone when I was a cadet; I've gotten into a bad habit with my terms. :)

Hope we defend it better than Fordham is so far.

We will. Fordham is Army's peer in physical talent. So Army's scheme isn't offset by a Fordham size and speed imbalance.

But the Vols are both larger and quicker than Ga Tech. That'll help offset their scheme.

This is starting to scare me a little. Fordham is running a no-huddle spread offense, looks somewhat similar to Tennessee's...and Army is running the triple option...and while I'm glad the guys in black are winning today, I hate the thought that the spread team is losing to the triple-O team. It seems almost like a premonition. Ugh.

Army and Navy's coaches both learned what they do under Paul Johnson. They are both pretty good to watch to catch up on it. Army plays a lot of heavy personnel group, so 6 linemen and 1 WR. I guess technically the 6th lineman is a TE, but he's really just a lineman. Tech is almost entirely "base" personnel group, which is 2 WRs, 2 slots, one tailback. We will occasionally break out the 6th linemen for the belly series.

Different formations but it is still defended the same. Stop the dive play first, stop the QB from running, and then take away the pitchman. There are three options to stop in each offense on each play.

One guy on the dive play, one guy on the QB and nine others guys to recover the fumbled pitch. 😀

Do you guys typically run out of the flexbone, Beej?

Shoop was DC when Penn State played Army. That one's on youtube if you're bored.

We don't call it that, but basically. PJ calls it "the spread option" and it's the flexbone with wider OL splits. With the wide splits, the slot backs are closer to where the slot receivers would be in a run and shoot formation, so in theory you can switch gears from option to run-and-shoot with no formation change. That's technically "the trick," although we don't often use it. In theory, we have the ability to audible into June Jones stuff if folks load the box. Question is whether we can execute it.

Thanks. Will be more fun to watch the game knowing that. :hi:

Navy is playing Kiffins FAU Owls right now on ESPNU.
