Outback Bowl notebook

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wisconsin began acclimating itself to the Florida heat Wednesday afternoon at the team's first practice in Tampa for the Outback Bowl against Tennessee, but the Badgers' preparation for the warm weather actually began in the Cheese State during recent weeks.

"We cranked the heat at our indoor stadium," coach Bret Bielema said.

At that facility, the temperature often reached 70. Even though it was pretty close to that (73 degrees) when the Badgers hit the field at Jefferson High on Wednesday, Bielema said there was no way to perfectly replicate everything in Madison.

"You can't," he said, "simulate the sun beating on you."

ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS: Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer isn't just preparing his team for a game this week, he's trying to fill two vacancies on his staff. Offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe is leaving to become head coach at Duke and wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor will be co-offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

Both are coaching the Vols through the bowl game.

Finding their replacements "is a process," Fulmer said. "The search is ongoing."

Fulmer hopes to have the new coaches in place in January.

O MY: The Badgers typically have one of the country's largest offensive lines, and this season is no different. The unit averages 6 feet 6 inches, 310 pounds, which Bielema was told would make it one of the biggest in the NFL. "The one thing we have an abundance of in Wisconsin is big people," Bielema said.

BADGER IS BACK: The Badgers got an emotional lift Wednesday when fifth-year senior James Kamoku, a key special teams performer and one of their most inspirational players, practiced for the first time since popping an Achilles' tendon in fall camp. "He's pretty excited," Bielema said.

ODDS AND ENDS: Both teams attended the Outback Steakhouse welcome dinner Wednesday at the Tampa Convention Center. Tonight, the teams will be guests at the Lightning-Canadiens game at the St. Pete Times Forum. ... Tennessee offensive tackle Ramon Foster (thumb), linebacker Ryan Karl (elbow) and linebacker Nevin McKenzie (ankle) returned to practice Wednesday. Each was injured in the Dec. 1 SEC Championship Game against LSU.

Were missing Bolden and McCoy, so I wouldnt be surpreised to see McKenzie and maybe Myers-White given blitze packages to create some heat on their QB.

Give me a friggin' break. They act like the game is being played in Sudan or something.

Well, it hasn't been in the 70's here since late October, and it's hovering in the 20s-30s recently with a couple days with a wind chill in the single digits or below zero. I don't know about the guys on the team, but I've completely adjusted to the winter temperatures. 40 degrees feels like I could wear shorts, so 70 is like a sauna.

Our average on the o-line is 315 lbs.

Chris Scott | 6-5, 300
Ramon Foster | 6-7, 340
Anthony Parker | 6-3, 305
Jacques McClendon | 6-3, 325
Josh McNeil | 6-4, 290
The 40 times are very close as well.

Take 40 times at tackle, for example.

68 Gabe Carimi | 6-8, 292, Fr. | (5.08) - 79 Chris Scott | 6-5, 300, So. | (5.14)

63 Kraig Urbik | 6-6, 330, Jr. | (5.21) - 78 Ramon Foster | 6-7, 340, Jr. | (5.29)

Overall UT's O-line has slightly better 40 times.

The big speed differences are at DB and WR. UT has bigger advantages in those areas.

Now that's what I call digging up information.

So their line averages 6ft 6inches and 315 lbs a piece. Ours is at about 6 ft 4 1/2 inches and 312 a piece. There's not much difference there if you ask me. I remember a couple of years ago when UT's line was the biggest ever in college football at about 330 a piece and they sucked. Our speed advantage at the skill positions should be a difference maker if our players can make it on the field and pass more than 6 credit hours of classes.

The subject of this thread is their O line who will be matching up with our D line. That's where the matchup takes place.

Just pointing out that their o-line isn't really that out of the ordinary and that ours is in fact just about the same.

No way McNeil weighs 295. He pushed to get it up to 290 during the summer. He's probably closer to 275-280 right now.

I would say most of those numbers are inflated actually, except for Parker's. I don't see how that guy only weighs 305.

Sounds like a good mismatch.

Wisconsin's OL vs Tennessee's DL. Especially when UT is without it's best DT (Bolden) and a good LB (McCoy). Starting to smell like an upset is brewing.

Reason for concern but we will prevail...

This is almost the same Wisconsin offense that an average Arkansas defense held to -5 rushing yards in 28 attempts during the Cap One bowl last year.

Even though Arkansas lost 14-17 (out-coached down the stretch), the Razorbacks mostly dominated the line of scrimmage while on defense, allowing Wisconsin only 201 total yards of offense.

Wisconsin has a huge OL, sure. But the Vols will beat them with much speed.
