Windy's football discussion thread.

The portal cannot make a program CFP-ready in one year or three. I’ve not read any cited examples that back up the contention that it can.

Texas had a decade of crapping on themselves before Sark and Washington had the Jimmy Lake era right before DeBoer. DeBoer got Penix and UW went from crap to CFP...

And Texas is never going to be the model of competent admin...

Texas had a booster revolt before Strong coached his first game because he was black

Texas boosters ran off their AD for hiring black coaches

No, we aren't the only one that had a screwed up administration/booster base

Again, Heup has done a very good job here. I am concerned that we will be closer to 2021 or 2023 than 2022 long term if we don't improve the OL. The recruiting and portal adds there have been underwhelming the past couple of years....

We played 5 defenses with a pulse and other than the first half against Bama (when OL errors caused us to leave points on the field), we were shut down...

Why don't you take your BS to the PF or FF?

You are not that stupid.
We do things differently here.
You don’t like it then GTFO

We’re going to be an up and down team….just like Washington…..just like Texas….just like Bama when Saban retires. Just like Georgia when Kirby goes.

Those kid of runs don’t happen very often and it’s kinda silly to think they do. Or it’s easy as just hiring the next coach.
Bama went through them till they threw the world at saban. And let’s face it, Smart was a crap shoot. He could have been just another guy they fired. Nobody knew what he was when he was. And honestly Hypel has been lightyears better than I thought he’d be.

Will he grow into something special?
I have no idea but I’m in no hurry to be turned down by everyone in America again.

I, on the other hand, have been wrong every single time I’ve thought “ this coach is going to be a great coach “ and my first thoughts on Hypel were that he was just more of the same crap for Tennessee. His first 3 years being the best in over 20 years proved I didn’t know what I was talking about.

He’s exceeded expectations for 2 of those years and met them in the 3rd.
Might even say he exceeded in the 3rd. I don't think fans have a great idea of how the team is going to look week to week anymore as much as we used to.

He’s been clear over and over that he’s not going to use the portal as a priority. He’s just not. I don’t know why people are surprised he’s doing what he says he’s going to do.

Stability, what an amazing concept.

Top rated OL seem rare in the portal I would prefer buying 4-5 star HS OL recruits and hiring a OL coach to develop them

Pruitt did a very good job of getting high end OL but he couldn't develop them. I think the current OL coach does a very good job developing them but other than Cooper Mays, who was signed by prior coach, there's not a lot of talent on this line. It is mostly lightly recruited players or P5 backup portal guys. And when they played a good DL, it was clear we didn't have the OL talent....

Going 10-2 might’ve been about the worst thing Heupel could’ve done. Set expectations too high for this season for fans, I was one of them lol

Florida was the only bad loss this year. And if we had Mays for that game maybe we win. If our bad years can be 8-4 then I will be very happy.

The current class does have 3 OL guys that are committed that are wanted by elite programs. That is a step in the right direction.....

But yes, an immediate infusion of talent is needed while those 3 develop.

That’s the only way to win consistently.
If he can string together another year like last year then recruitment gets easier. People can’t say it’s a fluke anymore

UF is in disarry right now - no way can the Vols afford to lose to them next season

I completely agree. It’s a home game, hopefully a night game. They’re coming off a bad year and are losing a good RB. If we lose to them next year, Heupel might as well start packing his bags. Can’t hang your season on one game but losing to a bad Florida team at home will have fans calling for his head. In the heat of the moment, I will probably be one of them lol

 OL isn't portal plug and play. You cannot take five guys out of the portal and expect lights out line play. OLs take awhile to gel and work together as a unit.

Which would explain why 3 of the guys with the most snaps on the line this year was from the portal...
